Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Bridge over M50 at Westwood

    A colleague in work just pointed out that there's a bridge over the M50 between Westwood and Glencairn. The southern end of the bridge seems to be in some inaccessible fields behind Holy Trinity NS.

    I haven't been able to find anything online about it. What was it built for?

    Those "fields" are actually an overflow car park for the racecourse.

    That one is just down the road and is much weirder. Its not wide enough for any of the development, and ends at some rocks just south of the M50.

    Road basically ends in a big open field. If they wanted they could extend the road south a bit then turn it towards and link up with the little cul de sac road near the roundabout into the shopping center.

    I'm guessing the racecourse land was split when the M50 was built and the bridge was built by the NRA to compensate?

    Yes, you can see the area concerned on the OSI map viewer aerial photography from 2000.

    Yes, it's a great resource. There's even older aerial photography there still in black and white.

    The historical maps are great too and you can fade the modern street maps in and out on top of them to compare them.

    That is the road from Lehaunstown, the road ends in a barrier a short bit south of the bridge. after a narrow section for pedestrians, it continues to Ballycorus.

    When I was a teenager, half a century ago, my father took me there on a drive and he was outraged when we found a gate closed across this road, just beyond Tully churchyard. My father was adamant that there was a public right of way on this road.
    Since the M50 alteration, it is effectively a cul-de-sac for one or two houses / farms.

    Actually I have been, I was at the Tully end earlier this week, and at the Bridge in the past year.
    Apart from the new twisty cul de sac on the right in the mentioned photo, it is the same as it was last time I was there.

    Of course there is considerable development in the Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone, but the actual lane from Tully Churchyard to the bridge over the M50 remains the same.

    You should try it yourself, get off the tram at Lehaunstown and walk up to the bridge, and if you have time continue to Ballycorus. Today is an excellent day for a walk.

    For anyone in 2021 looking to cross this bridge as a shortcut etc. It is completely possible. There is a welded passthrough gap in the fence (green star) just off the roundabout before the Dunnes Stores carpark. On the westwood side there is no barrier.

    lads, look at the desire line diagonally through the car park, theres a gap in the fence to fit through much nearer the roundabout
