Must give The Departed a spin before it, ahem, departs. One of my favourite movies. Highly recommend if you've never seen it

Haven't read it in a about 15 years and never got around to the last ones. Wasn't a bad series of books and I even got the PC game when it came out. Will be interesting to see how the series goes.

Got round to watching Boss Level. It's good fun if you want to have something light and easy to watch in an evening. Did find the ending a bit underwhelming.

I was shocked to learn Frank Grillo is 56. Looks amazing for his age.

Finished it a while ago (all 14 tomes) but yes, it's a series with a lot of potential for a good TV show. There's a proper (finished!) story, good range of characters, monsters & magic, etc. It predates 'A Song of Ice and Fire'/'A Game of Thrones' and I don't really think they're alike but no doubt people will compare them anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,600 ✭✭✭Wrongway1985

It's pretty much badly written monologues by well known actors, was a pointless exercise imo not sure it would have existed if not for the pandemic. Wasn't a struggle to get through really due to the length of the episodes but not a worthwhile viewing.

I watched a film called The Wedding Guest with Dev Patel, well made but quite slow. Dev is very good as a crim for hire type who arrives at a wedding in Pakistan with nefarious purposes. As I said it's slow and there's not much to the plot, could have done with a bit more tension as I never really felt the characters were in any danger.

Went on a horror run yesterday across Netflix and Amazon.

The Dark (2018) is the type of production I like when it comes to horror; low budget which means the effects and make up are forced to be resourceful, and if the idea is good enough it makes for a special effort that separates itself from the umpteen bad attempts on the same budget.

It's quite good, would love to see it explored more. I'm surprised Amazon haven't tried to make more of it.

Eden Lodge was a decent horror! Not what I was expecting 😄

    The Voyeurs (2021)

This is a must watch movie just for the ending alone. I didn't know much about it prior to watching and this definitely added had an impact on my experience.

Young couple move into their new apartment that over looks an adjacent apartment owned by a very adventurous couple who are not shy about what they get up to.

I did not realise The Voyeurs was an Amazon Original.

I've been watching LulaRich. A four part documentary about a multi level marketing company / pyramid scheme / cult mainly involving leggings.

Can't believe they are getting The Green Knight so soon! Did Amazon co-fund it or just maybe splurge on the rights?

I find David Lowerys movies to be extremely hit and miss, for me at least. Ain't Them Bodies Saints was fine, I enjoyed Pete's Dragon way more than I thought I would, I found A Ghost Story to be one of the most painful movie-watching experiences ever and then I loved The Old Man and the Gun. I'll be giving his latest a go at least!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I don't think they co-funded, perhaps Amazon just spotted a lot of social media buzz. They've been scooping up a few movies lately.

I sometimes find it hard to rationalize the guy behind the charming Pete's Dragon remake also made A Ghost Story - and this (based on what I've seen of the trailer).

I was completely unaware of this but looks like it's UK theatrical release was cancelled last minute as the delta variant emerged and there was a recent arrangement to have a parallel theatrical/streaming release next week.

Yeah it’s a UK / Ireland specific arrangement after the distributor here got cold feet. Amazon bought up the rights for here, albeit with the caveat from A24 I believe that it’d get some kind of big screen release (still being handled by the original distributor AFAIK).

I watch ‘The Voyeurs’ knowing nothing about it really other than there would be nudity!! Jeez wasn’t expecting a film like that, well worth a watch. Serious babe main star in it.

    The Man Women's Ball

Written, starring, and directed by Mélanie Laurent. This had it's world premiere at TIFF last week and is now on Prime. It's an adaptation of a book and is about Eugenie, a young Parisian woman in 1885. Having annoyed her father one too many times by having opinions, he takes the first chance he gets (her telling her granny she can see spirits) to throw her into a notorious asylum for "hysterical" women. There she is subjected to a string of horrific "treatments" at the hands of the most renowned doctor in the new field of psychology. Laurent plays one of the head nurses at the asylum who forms a bond with Eugenie because of her alleged ability to speak with the dead, and everything is leading up to the titular ball where the women patients are allowed attend a ball where the richest of Parisian society get their kicks mixing with the "mad" women.

It's slow paced and doesn't shy away from the horrors these women were put through in the name of "science", but it's never exploitative or torture porn. It's probably not everyone's cup of tea but I was enthralled from beginning to end, and Lou de Laage is wonderful in the lead role of Eugenie, and having watched 3 of Laurent's films this year, I am a big fan of her work as a writer and director. (The first film I saw of hers as a director was Galveston, made in English, set in the US, and I wasn't a big fan, but she didn't write that one. So whether it's her writing or just working in her own language, I don't know, but she's definitely a talent)

The world-building and story were great, the writing and some of the character development (or total lack thereof) was atrocious. It has huge potential for a television series as it's far, far too long a story to be told in film format and the mis-steps of the source material are so widely recognised by it's readership that it wouldn't take a genius to fix them (I'd imagine simply having a few women in the writers room would fix most of them tbh).

Running Scared has been added recently. Must be over 10 years ago that I watched it and remember it being very good. I think it is a modern twister version of red riding hood.

Watched Chaos Walking which I expected to be average enough but was pleasantly surprised. Nothing earth shattering but certainly passes the time reasonably well. Solid cast (Mads as the bad guy is always worth a look), interesting premise and I hadn't realised it was directed by Doug Liman of the first Bourne Identity (you know when the camera wasn't swinging all over the place during action sequences) and Edge of Tomorrow fame.
