I'm only joking with you, but its good to know of other options.

I'm glad I came on here to this thread. I got a quote recently and just spotted a similar one for half the price.

I spotted the mysolar mention also. How is everyone getting on with their install?

The golden rule is, SHOP AROUND!

If your installer has an "8" in their name, you are definitely paying too much. 3-4 K too much probably.

Best home improvement I have done. I the gift that keeps on giving.

Did you pick a company yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 190 ✭✭Danger Fourpence

No, not picked one yet but have definitely been pointed in the right direction

Quote sent to wrong email. Had to follow up 2 weeks later. Free Eddi now removed.

10 panel, Eddi hot water diverter, 2.4Kwp BPE battery and Inverter. For a limited time, I can offer the hot water diverter free of change if go ahead now. That would give you a net cost of €11,000-€2,952 grant equals a net total of €8,048.

Wanted him to quote for 20 panels. Told I didn't need that.

The short story of a Solar PV owner, A WARNING but a good one IMO.

I started out with 4.8kw of panels (16), no optimizers and 7kw of battery with a water diverter on a Solis 5kw inverter. Not bad but?

Now its 6.2 kw of panels (20), all them with optimizers and a upgraded battery to 10.5kw.

Next it will be a 6kw inverter with an extra 2kw (6 panels) ish of panels, but funds and life (wife) will dictate that.

I'm only 2 years in and my most expensive bill was € 114, please remember €40 plus of that is PSO/TAX and unavoidable.

Solar PV is an addiction but in my view a good one.

Jump in and enjoy, It works.

You'll really see the most benefit of the extra kwp on the duller days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭bullit_dodger

I added an extra 4 panels for that specific reason.

Can anybody suggest a reason why my salesman was only quoting for 8/10 panels and refused to quote for any more. ? I couldn't see myself buying a system to save 4kW per day. And at that output, why would I even need a battery. This is all so new to me.

Waiting on a 3rd quote - but so far... wondering any advice on these 2 please.

Quote A: 4.76 KW system for 10K euro (before grant 3k)

14 PANELS 340 WATT 4.76 KW.JA SOLAR 25 YEARS GUARANTEE. 5KW HYBRID SOLIS INVERTER. 4.8 BATTERY. EDDI WATER DIVERTER. WI FI DONGLE.

Quote B: 7.2 KW system for 12,700 euro (before grant 3k)

16 LONGI panels– These are powerful (450Watt each) and comes with 25 years of warranty.  6kw Huawei Inverter with 10 Years Warranty and Live Monitoring System.  5kw HUAWEI Battery with 10 years warranty and 100 of depth of discharge ability.  1 Free Energy Diverter(SOLAR IBOOST) with an electronic sensor.

My install would be 8 panels east and 8 west in Tipperary North area. Oil heating (1 zone is water), no EVs planned and roughly 300/2 months for leccy.

Probably because he is clueless. Look for another installer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭garo

Both quotes ok but could be 10-15% better. If you can haggle and get the price down by 10-15%% on either go for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 635 ✭✭✭idc

That's not 4kW per day. I have 4.65kWp (15 x 310w) today that generated 16.2 kWh. In July I was generating 20-30kWh a day hence with battery you don't need to pay for electricity at night (depending on nightly load)

Still doesn't explain why he would not quote more though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

Both good but I would go B. Hagel a bit and see how you get on.

Thanks all for the advice and help. One quote was directly recommended from this forum. I am leaning towards the larger system based on a LOT of what you all have shared here.

Is it just me or normal to keep looking at roofs now... where are all the panels??? its seems so rare stil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭bullit_dodger

Apparently 50,000-60,000 houses in Ireland have panels, which seems like a lot until you realize there's some ~ 2.4m homes (or at least 2.4 was the number of meters that ESB were quoting that had to be replaced by smart meters) So rough rule of thumb 1 in 40 or I guess.

Yeah, you'd think there'd be more.....

Get customer references from the company you choose and talk to them and ask how they got on.

    And then haggle a bit.

Rough ball park seems to be in around €1K per Kwp. Batteries of course do add substantially to it, but midsummer.ie should give you some ball park figures to see what they cost. Not sure what you meant by

    "or 5.7Kwh for 10800"

as that would seem like a larger battery for a cheaper price.

Think you can do better out there though......I'd pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭bullit_dodger

in the process of getting an install done myself. 5.3Kwp panels (14x380), 5kw inverter, 8.2Kwhr battery, Eddi diverter €8,600 for the lot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,610 ✭✭✭championc

Many people have bought systems at €1k per 1kWp.

SaaS is at this price point

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

Ask for a 6kw Inverter and 4 extra panels. See how you get on for a year then add more later. It should only go up by a grand.

Is that 10500 before or after grant?

The other quote is too much and the battery is too small. Yes it looks impressive but its too much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭garo

This would be a good system. I would prefer this to the 12 panel system you have been quoted for. But realistically you shouldn't pay a cent over 8k after grant for this. So the quote is at least 5k too high. Probably 6k too high.

I’ve asked for a number of quotes from different companies (It’s amazing the spread of prices for relatively similar systems)

In general the following seem to be the most popular brands offered for PV panels, inverters and batteries. The huawei battery and inverter seemed to make systems dearer - is it worth it?

Is there any brand here you’d advise staying away from / investing in?

    Solar Panels

    Q Cell

    Jinko

    Longi

    Sun tech Ultra V

    Batteries

    Pure Drive

    Triple Power

    Huawai

    Sonnen

    Inverters

    Solis Inverter

    Huawai

    Solax

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭MAULBROOK

I'm using a Solis inverter (widely used, no issues)

BYD battery (widely used and no issues)

Panels, can't remember and I don't really care. They work and that is all that matters.

Had this written before I refreshed the page. +1 on MAULBOOK says.

Can't speak about the batteries or inverters as I didn't research them in too much detail nor do I have 1st hand experience, but as far as I know panels are much to a muchness really. Longi and Q Cell probably have a slightly better life and reputation, but really I think you can't go wrong with most of them. Manufacturers offer guarantees of 80-85% production after 20 years or so. Different brands may have slight different performance (single digit percent...if even), but then you can offset that and get the same production by installing an additional cheaper panel, than fewer more expensive one, so I probably wouldn't worry about it too much. In 15-20 years anyway I expect performance to be in the 25%-30% range over the 20-22% efficency they have today anyway - but that's too far down the road to worry about now.

I think panel wise the only advice that I (and probably everyone on this forum) can give, is get as many as your can. If you think you need 3kwp, I'd chuck on a least an extra 2-3 panels if you have the space on your roof and future proof yourself a little. It's cheaper to install a few extra now than it is to get another install in a year as the fixed cost of arranging fitter to come out and go onto your roof a second time. Electric vehicles are the future. I think Ireland has a desire to stop all internal combustion new vehicle sales by 2030 and your power requirements in 5-10 years will probably be a lot different from today - so yeah, a few extra panels won't go astray.
