I am on the rural fibre rollout. A month or so back, someone from Vodafone came knocking asking if I wanted to connect to super fast fibre. I told him I already was and had been for over two years, for a minute he didn't believe me, until I told him the speed. He confirmed something I already suspected from walking the road and looking at poles and cables, that I was the only person on the road who had a fibre connection. Over two years on from fibre going live and only one person on a road getting a connection.

I can see why an ISP might be hesitant about estimating and provisioning for demand. In their shoes, I wouldn't.

The ability to pre-order 90 days out (and indeed the "keep-up-to-date" email registration) should give them some indication of where there is interest at the eircode level months (and indeed in some cases, years) out from when the connections go live. In other words, you'd imagine they have a lot more data on interested customers.

If the take-up is low, then there shouldn't be any major delays in getting connected. Anyway, it's all just finger in the air stuff at this stage.

The installations will be carried out by a contractor, likely KNN, on behalf of NBI. There is the option for the installer to carry and install the RSP router. This comes at a cost to the RSP of €35 ex-VAT per install so some RSPs will opt to courier the router to the end user. There are a suite of other services available that RSPs can opt to pay for on installation such as UPS, data port extension, power socket extension lead, set top box installation and wireless optimisation.

The NBI website has had a makeover. There does not seem, at first glance, to be any more information provided than on the previous version.

    Update...

Area: West Wicklow. Specifically the lane I live on.

Some people have asked for timeframes. So in my particular case (might apply overall)...

September 2020: One man and an Actavo/NBI van doing a survey.

December 2020: One man taking pictures of poles etc.

26th March 2021: Contractors cutting hedges and trees.

30th August 2021: A crew arrived and strung fibre between the poles.

    Anticipated availability: October 2021 - December 2021.

    Anticipated availability: January 2022 - April 2022.

I just spotted a lot of that info (about the additional items) when digging through NBI.ie:

, in the In-Home-Services schedule doc. It's actually pretty impressive. Little things like the wireless optimization are a really good idea for most people.

Does not indicate demographics on your road though?

I'd go out on a limb and say the last 18 months have shown people their need for a strong broadband connection. Those that haven't see it are probably older. Or jobs don't require it.

Had a look there. Visual update aside, the only "new" thing I see is that for those of us premises pending survey, it now states Pending Survey

We are actively working to accelerate the rollout of high-speed fibre broadband in your area. Sign up to get regular updates on the rollout.*

It looks like it states the "accelerate" message for all areas Pending survey which doesn't say much. Just a generic message for all in that status.

The NBI were supposed to present more detailed timelines at the end of August but doesnt look like that has come to pass.

It seems all of the rollout area around the Monaghan Town area went live for pre order on Monday. A couple of premises went live for pre order two weeks ago have changed to order now, which is a good sign for the rest. In fairness NBI’s timeline for this area was July to September 2021 since last December and only changed to August to September 2021 in June.

Placed my pre order with Digiweb today so fingers crossed we will be one of the first connected. Days surviving off 2.5mbps are hopefully coming to an end!!

I'm curious about the pre-order process. After you mentioned Monaghan town, I picked one of the IA points that was up for pre-order and selected the Digiweb option. That brought me here:

    https://digiweb.ie/nbi/

Then it only asked me for my Eircode, Email address, Contact number, and name. Is that all they look for with a pre-order?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,957 ✭✭✭clohamon

It could be that they're delaying updates until the completion of the 'acceleration' agreement.

Either way it looks like Minister Ossian Smyth made the rookie error of announcing something on foot of a verbal undertaking from a commercial organisation. He's now over a barrel.

I called their general sales line, mentioned my eircode and said it was up on NBIs site as ready to preorder. The packages they offer i.e. 500mbps & 1gb are listed under Lightning FTTH

I agree they should have more info on their NBI page, probably haven’t had much incentive given the slow rollout.

Separately I signed up for alerts months ago with Digiweb for updates and today they sent a text saying pre orders are now live and offering free installation if you preorder.

Spotted NBI lads at the head of my road, ballymurray area Roscommon. Hopefully a push is on!!

    Limerick area update

Attended NBI pop up what a joke. They simply look up your eircode on website!!!!!!

Could give no information other than we are in pre order. want to see their faces when I told them that has been the status for over 100 days

Anybody on here have a contact point for NBI CEO Peter Hendrick?

You could find that information yourself :) https://cybarrior.com/blog/2019/04/05/eagle-eye-reverse-lookup-tool-for-social-media-accounts/

BTW, I found the team (BOTS most likely) on Twitter to be next to useless.

Yeah I think they released a big section for connection on the 1st of September or so, driving around my area today and I saw a good few KN Network vans driving around going to connect people. They were different vans to the infrastructure people. My Parents are getting connected on Monday...I dont know how much use my 87 and 85 year old parents will need of a 500Mbs connection but I convinced them they needed it 😁😁

To be honest though my parents do use the internet a lot Netflix etc and they do game online (bridge that is) also I showed my dad my unifi protect security camera and you know these auld fellas out in the country they are convinced they are being robbed all the time so I promised them I will get them set up.

On a good note I did see my neighbours also getting connected today and they would be in their late 60s if not 70 so hopfully NBI will get good traction and get good sign up.

DRCD announcing 200 of BCPs are connected but funding after three years is dependent on 'learnings'.

    https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/a2932-broadband-connection-points/

The typical BCP will receive a 150/30mbps service from NBI. This will be achieved via a temporary wireless broadband connection that will stay in place until the premises is passed by fibre services.

Vodafone Ireland supplies and supports the superfast WiFi at each site. The equipment used is enterprise grade standard and includes indoors and outdoors WiFi access points.

The Department of Rural and Community Development will support all BCPs for a minimum of 3 years.

A range of thematic pilot activities will launch over the coming months. These will test the use of BCPs under the following headings:

    • eHealth

    • Arts & Culture

    • Remote Working

    • Training and Education

Learnings from these pilots will inform future funding, development activities and supports.

Outside Roscommon town on N63. (Nov-Dec 21) Just spoke to NBI guy walking around with an ipad outside the front of the house. Two months max he said, nearly there.

I'm out the N61 side. Looks like we'll have a nice Christmas pressie courtesy of NBI.🤞

Well, are they there yet? are they there yet?

Good luck, hope it all goes well. I've another six months to go yet and hoping the duct from the path to the house is clear 🤞

Has your eircode switched to pre-order? Tipperary DA has the same availability (Nov-Dec), but we're still showing "Network build in progress"

Supposed to be here between 12 and 4, no sign yet! Sitting at the window like a child at christmas 🤣

Still showing the same status as you. I did get a pre-emptive pre-order text from a local provider a few months ago before it got pushed back to Nov-Dec. I ordered then, but haven't heard anything since.
