To be fair... Odhran said at the time, and I quote: "we will be deleting all old Private messages that are older than 30 days".

Any additional info/contradictions came much later

You would hope that person is fine tuning their CV for the next role right now. Lots of jobs going in hospitality I hear, they might be better suited to that than a DPO

If people want to do that, that is their prerogative, but it should be remembered that actions are not without consequences. Tying the site admin up in data access requests, even if they are legally entitled to them will certainly hasten the demise of the site.

Maybe that's the goal, but it would seem strange behaviour from a community that apparently values this resource.

Thanks for re-iterating my last paragraph 👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭MrMusician18

Indeed. Your last paragraph wouldn't have needed reiteration if you hadn't written an instructional post on how to collapse the site.

I'd liken it to walking past a bunch of hooligans looting a shop and loudly declaring, "it's a good job they haven't barricaded the approach road otherwise the guards wouldn't be able to come"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,938 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

And you are helping him by repeating it, well done.

You posited a situation regarding PMs in the post of yours that I originally replied to.

I outlined that procedure and the legally binding timelines surrounding it. That any request places a burden on boards is of course a concern.

But, given the haphazard mode that boards.ie approached the migration, the privacy concerns around it and their constant efforts to lay blame for their own compliance issues? It is an issue of their own making.

Again, I have no interest in advising anyone to take the frankly heavy handed approach of submitting SARs for the sole purpose of overloading the admin staff or forcing Boards into further breaches of GDPR compliance.

Further, my reply and my "instructional post" were in response to your musing that...

I wouldn't hold my breath. Given that the site has no money and tons of problems and the crude simple solution solves the problem, I'd bet that you won't see these PM's back for months if ever.

In fact I'd bet that if people really need old PMs that they'll only be available on request.

Why exactly are they deleting ons older than 30 days ? Is it all PMs or just deleted PMs? I have some PMs older than 30 days that I want to keep. Why would boards delete these ?

Your PMs should be restored now. Odhran posted to say any you had deleted are gone, but those you kept should be back now.

So how do we delete these PMs containing personal information which has been moved outside of the EU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,196 ✭✭✭✭Deja Boo

Has there really ever been a true 'delete'? ...or merely hidden from users sight, with all bits off data (whether "deleted" by both sender and receiver, or not) stored somewhere on the site?

In fairness, the old button should have been named 'hide' rather than 'delete'... Atleast 'leave the discussion' doesn't imply any false promises of hard deletion, when there is no (proven) intent to dump the data.

By storing it, there is an inherent vulnerability for the info to be accessed by any number of IT platform workers, even though boards mods/admins say they, themselves don't take advantage of our privacy.

If we ask for our data to be truly removed, yet it remains stored - then our private info must be deemed as some sort of value to the business, if not potential monetary gain of harvesting, tabulating, marketing, et al... does it not?

What about PMs from deleted accounts? Are those messages actually deleted or marked "invisible"?

Rather makes a mockery of the 'your inbox is full' warnings that used to come up on old boards if the messages were never actually deleted...

So have boards actually told us who has access to our PMs at this stage.

Have just caught up with the thread as I haven't been spending any time on boards since the migration. Just had a look in my inbox. There's a PM there from 2014 which I would have deleted some time in 2014. There's also a few more from earlier this year. So clearly they haven't deleted all the PMs.

It doesn't appear to be possible to delete any PMs/messages from my account. Was this option removed during migration?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,798 ✭✭✭✭DrumSteve

Certainly makes a mockery of being told my inbox was full all those times.

Which we all hope means the Conversation is GONE for good. Maybe @Boards.ie: Niamh could clarify?

I have deleted private messages from six years ago now showing up in my messages.

Are these not being deleted by the admins? I can't see a way of deleting them myself, though clearly that doesn't - and has never - happened anyway. Saying information is deleted after however long is obviously incorrect - the only question is whether that's a lie or a mistake. There's no coming back from this. How can anyone trust management when it's such a spectacular mess, and users misled?

I'd like some reassurance that our information is deleted permanently when/if we close our accounts and/or anonymize our content.

    >can't see a way of deleting them myself

There is a Leave Conversation button at the bottom which seems to be the new 'Delete' function.

No confirmation yet as to whether the Conversation is hard-deleted or not. @Boards.ie: Niamh ?

I very much doubt it. from what i can figure out the people who are in the conversation don't "own" it. it exists outside their account. If they leave the conversation still exists.

I'm missing all of my PMs bar one. I presume this is the same for everyone else? I guess they're gone for good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,805 ✭✭✭✭banie01

Any update from the ODPC on this yet?

Boards is a free service and nobody is forcing you to use it. They don't owe you anything. If you're not happy, leave. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
