CNN removed from Freesat EPG

It looks like CNN International will be dropped from free-to-air satellite and also Virgin Media from 1st September. The exception is that it should be retained on Sky HD subscriptions.

They are apparently re-focusing to being a mostly online subscription service.

I don't think I will miss it in its current form, much of which seemed to be internal US politics and an obsession with the UK.

So far, this appears to effect only the Freesat EPG and Vodafone customers only. CNN is still on free to air satellite and Virgin Media in Ireland. I’ve renamed the thread to reflect.

Given the number of alternative news channels freely available, for CNN to go behind a paywall is either foolish or arrogant IMO.🤔

Yeah it’s an odd one, though Sky viewers won’t notice any change. News channels are just not subscription drivers and there’s plenty of free news out there. Especially CNN International, though the “International” part seems to become less and less relevant as time goes on as they simulcast CNN US more and more.

Seems a rather poor decision, surely have the basic news channel in SD form for free and then offer a premium version in HD at extra cost would be the way to go. Can't see there being much take up for it at all particularly if they kill of the free channel before the premium is launched.

I'm still receiving CNN on my very , very old non subscription sky box but more and more channels moving to HD and as they do, I loose them, will need to get a HD free sat box soon.

CNN International is just awful, the only International aspect to it, is its bizzare dependence on African mobile company, conglomerates and banks advertising on it. Typically americanised format, adverts every few minutes, it would put sky to shame.

It's essentially CNN UK and my, they've some pretty dreadful and arrogant presenters and correspondents. I find it amusing how irrelevant CNN deems its International channel, breaking away from it when someone sneezes in the US.

Anyone able to recommend a reasonably priced Free Sat box HD, I've an old sky box, newish aerial, just something to get the free UK channel's, news etc .

Not familiar with how free to View works, advantages, disadvantages etc. I've saorview on separate aerial direct to TV , live in rural Midlands.

CNN still on the Freesat EPG at the moment, but all programme information has been removed.

Still on Virgin Media in Dublin too, but I don't know if that's going to be eventually affected by the CNN decision.

Yes, I'm gradually losing HD channels, just curious, is it a case CNN just pulling the plug re availability on free sat 🤔, will it be the same on FTA, free view etc, seems a very strange decision

FreeSat is a brand of software that compiles an EPG for dedicated boxes. Channels pay a fee to be on that EPG. There are several FTA channels that do not pay that fee and are therefore not on FreeSat boxes but are available FTA. Channel 4 HD is the most notable of these. At present it is unclear if CNN is just leaving FreeSat but remaining FTA or if it is going behind a paywall. The paywall option would seem to be commercial suicide.

Vodafone texted me yesterday saying CNN will be removed.

Over lockdown, I had grown quite fond of dipping in and out at certain times of the day. Julia Chatterley has a good show in the afternoons - She's afraid of no one.

I'll also miss John King and his touchscreen election coverage - Along with him is Abbey Philips and Kaitlin Collins who are great.

Anderson Cooper in small doses and of course, Donie!

I'm left with RTE news now, which is laughable - How many times have you switched it on only to find a live stream of mass? BBC news is decent. Sky news is a joke. RT News should be illegal and that's about it.
