Why 3.30pm throw ins ?

Just curious if anyone knows the origins of why Sunday GAA games traditionally start at 3.30 pm ?

I know with the arrival of live TV that games earlier in the season now start at 2pm or 4pm, but anything not on TV on a Sunday start at 3:30pm.

So why is it, ? how did it start ?, Had it anything to do with the end of morning mass, or getting done before the Angelus ?

It's just odd that it's on the half hour rather than the hour.

It's probably something that is lost to the mists of time but I imagine it is likely due to a number of factors, latest time possible after morning mass, latest time to finish up before it impacts on other activities (milking/evening tea) finish up before the Angelus, and for big games time to get the last train from Connolly. Sometimes GAA traditions just exist because to be different from other sports.

I was told it was to allow time for people to go to mass and make it back for the minor match.

Could be a load of crap, but that's what I was told years ago.

Like in English soccer the tradition start time of 3pm on a Saturday is because 120 years ago industrial workers got paid on a Saturday and got a half day.

I had though of Paul Rouse alright , I'll e-mail him.

Well you have the strange throw in time of 3pm for the football final on September 11th. Most finals on a Saturday usually were at 6pm especially replays.

Love seeing that a match is at 3.30, linked to the big occasions of youth I suppose, when you're obviously most excitable.

The final on 11th is at 5pm

The time on the 4th (the original rescheduled date) was 3pm because ether was also WC qualifier at 5 (I think) in The Aviva, so they wanted the GAA match started and finished before the soccer one.
