Employing a remote working outside Ireland

    I have a small business and am looking to bring on a new person who is based outside Ireland, not in the EU.

    I have a HR company service who help with Irish employment law, contracts and so on, but they have no ability to help set someone up who is not based here. I assume hiring someone abroad, as a full time employee, they are under the employment law of their country.

    Has anyone had to do this? I don't even know who to reach out to for something like this.

    Yes, they are. You need to find a HR company in that country, the equivalent to the one you have in Ireland. It can be quite difficult, depending on the laws in that country.

    Alternatively, you use the person's services as a contractor, not an employee.

    So they're working remotely but you want them on your payroll? Are you registered as an employer in the new person's home country? I wouldn't think so... Sounds like a very specialist thing to do.

    Maybe a contractor/umbrella company arrangement is the way to go.

    I am looking at the contract route, and the person has agreed to that as an option so that will simplify things.

    It made me wonder about any foreign folks working in Ireland who were able to fly back to their home country & work from home. If they are looking to make that a permanent move, their employer is going to have to cater for that.
