Removing an adult from house

Posting on someone else's behalf, they have an alcoholic son in his 40s who is back living at home after starting drinking again and being thrown out by his wife. The parent is living on their nerves, the son is falling, starting rows etc. The parent cannot relax in their own house. The parent is 80 and suffers from health problems, when they tell the son to leave he won't and they can't physically remove him. Is there any way to get him out? The parent is aware the son will then be homeless but they feel they can't cope any more

Depending on how the sons behaviour is impacting the parents a barring order is appropriate. It's a regular problem courts and Gardaí deal with on a regular basis. This scenario occurs irrespective of socioeconomic backgrounds and the victims in such a scenario will get support from many different agencies.

Interesting question, if a homeowner wants to evit an adult child, do they need to go through a process or can they just throw them out?

I know in America, you have to give a tenant who has been living there for more than a year 30 days to leave your home (regardless of whether they've been paying rent or not).

An adult child living with a parent is not a tenant. There are a licensee and can be removed at any time. No notice is required, they can be just locked out and their personal possessions send on to them. Other persons who reside in the same dwelling as the owner of the property are generally licensees and the notice they get is dependent on the contract they have with the owner. It is unusual for the owner to provide a contract which gives the larger licensee anything like 30 days notice. If the owner doesn't want to continue living with someone they will usually want them out immediately.
