Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

Know very little about cars but have a 08 Yaris that generally does <50km a week city driving with the odd road trip. Got about 130km on it now and as I'm over 6ft I'd like something more spacious. First time in years looking at cars I have an idea in my head it would be good to get a hybrid in terms of tax and fuels savings. I'd like to buy a 171 or newer but there are very few hybrids larger than a yaris in that budget. See a few Auris and the odd high mileage prius. Most are over €20k.

If I look for a regular petrol car I get loads more options and much nicer cars and from browsing here I see people mentioning that lots of petrol hybrids are not much more than a marketing gimmick. Based on our low level use and budget am I wrong to be completely excluding petrol only from this? Its all very confusing! Any thoughts much appreciated.

At 50km a week you would be much better suited to go down the electric car route. A first generation Nissan LEAF will do about 120km on a single charge.

    Here's an example...

Not a great time to be buying a car as there is very little value to be got at present. Used car prices are high due to high demand and low supply post Brexit. Hybrids are popular so you will pay top dollar for one even second hand. At only driving 50km per week in the city I'd nearly look at alternative modes of transport or just keep what you have for the time being. With your usage and what you would need to spend there is very chance of anything paying for itself over the lifetime of your ownership.

Hybrids are not marketing gimmicks. They give good fuel economy and are nice to drive being silent and automatic.

If you want a change, how about a 2016 Honda Fit for around €10k? They’d be a bit more spacious than a Yaris. They are a nice car to drive

Your fuel costs when I round up and up are circa 30 a month? Can you confirm? Even if you halfed your fuel cost to 15 you would save just 1800 over ten years of ownership. Barely 10% of your capital car cost.

I would either get a leaf if you can install a home charger and your other journeys are doable or priorities comfort and quality for your height. A small petrol engine driven well can be very efficient.
