it is the same in judo, tae kwon do and wrestling. All events where a losing semi-finalist could get hurt and be unable to compete in a bronze medal.

Couldn't say, but a possibility is that someone who loses their semi final got knocked out, there is only one day inbetween the semis and the final, as opposed to the earlier rounds where you have 3 days between the Last 16 and the Quarters. Not much time for a recovery/assessment? Or the Olympic Spirit of you did well to get here, let's not have one of you lose two fights in a row?

Other combat sports have two bronze medals through something like the GAA's back door system. If you lose your QuarterFinal, you are still not out.

    Say the Quarterfinals: A vs B | C vs D | E vs F | G vs H |

    Semifinals: A vs C | E vs G | Repechages: vs D | vs H

    Finals: vs E | Bronze Medal Matches: vs B | vs F

A gets gold, E gets Silver, C and G are given bronze medals. There is no third place playoff.

Ide be all for throwing a few BMX tracks around even if we never won anything from it.

It's a very different animal to a skatepark though and I don't see any council just throwing them up and leaving them unsupervised due to the danger ( which is kinda gas given that a child can cycle down a mountain side and no one can stop them but that's what happens when the country goes mad for the sueing )

    1. In boxing, both the semifinalist receives bronze medal. This is because of the provision of boxing by which a loser of a boxing match can only fight his/her next bout after a certain time period. But as these competitions are of very limited time period, both the semifinalist receives bronze medal.

    There ya go.

We've BMX tracks in Lucan, Cork, Gorey and Ratoath.

And an association which runs leagues and has affiliated clubs etc. So there's a structure in place.

They are pretty much what you get in the Olympics, 3 hairpins with jumps, bumps and slopes and a track wide enough for 6 racers.

Hmm.. still doesn't really make sense. How can the winner of the semi safely go on to fight in the final. But the loser is deemed not able for fight a 3rd place. The argument about injuries applies just as much to other sports and is considered part of the game. Many sports are highly attritional and injuries are part and parcel.

If you follow the logic of above, there really should be 2 Gold medals given and 2 Silver or Bronze.

I get it that these are the rules of the boxing governing bodies and not the Olympics per se but when you look at it coldly, it makes it easier to medal in say boxing than say table tennis or rugby sevens.

Anyway the boxing competitions in Olympics are odd in that most of the worlds best boxers can't compete. The whole amateur/ professional thing is complete nonsense.

Is that the policy for other martial arts, including fencing?

Women's football QF on BBC - Australia just scored in the 88th minute to go 2-2 with GB. Tense finish or extra time coming up

Would be a lot more common for the loser to get knocked out. Bit odd to see it happen a winner

A New Zealand cox has apparently become the first ever man to win a medal in a woman's event at the Olympics

Because a loser is more likely to have been injured than a winner. Apart off course the boxer in the last olympics who got badly beaten by the Irish boxer and couldn't fight in the next medal round.

Looks like Walsh has done himself an injury . Sprained His ankle when he jumped up in celebration after his win.

Would be a be a huge pity if that keeps out of medals.. fingers crossed he gets it sorted.

Ooooh hope for fastest placed 4th. The last changeover lost them a little bit of time. He’d have got third or second otherwise, I think.

Ireland finish 4th in heat 1. Great effort.

if anyone here has seen the old battle of network stars that used to be on the American TV network ABC they did the mixed male and female swimming and running and it worked well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,967 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

The USA have been disqualified from the mixed relay so Ireland are through to the final. A nice bit of luck there. Not sure what the US did to be DQed.

Ireland through to final. USA disqualified.

USA disqualified. Not exactly sure what for but that qualifies Ireland. Would imagine USA were one of favourites too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,967 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Not sure either but on a relay you’d assume it was a mess up on the hand over. According to George they were the favourites.

Both the USA and Dominican Republic have now both been DQed so Ireland are now second in their heat.

Aw delighted for them , they're buzzing and who can blame them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,967 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

And it seems their time would have good enough to qualify anyway.

6th fastest but that’s with the stall at the last changeover.

Do we have any ringers to bring in for the final? Get Rhasidat Adeleke on a plane.
