Where is the uproar around apprenticeships these days? Solas and the ETB's have completely failed, there is apprentices waiting 2 plus years for phase 2 with most electrical/e&i apprenticeships taking 5 years if not longer now. No one has signed up for a 5 year apprenticeship and it is costing all these apprentices money in the form of missed increments or working on 4th year rate with 5 years experience instead of getting qualified rate(handy money saver for some companies). The ESB have brought phase 2 in house because solas were so incompetent they were making their apprentices waiting for years for a phase 2 block that should be done in your first year.

There would be uproar if this was happening to others involved in third level education but as usual apprenticeships are the forgotten child of the education system. Is anything being done to rectify the problems in the apprenticeship? Does anyone in power care?

It would seem that the knee jerk move of dissolving Fas and dropping the staff count from almost 2000 to 200, was poorly thought out. In spite of the spending scandals, the system at least seemed somewhat functional.

This happened around 2006-2008 also. Unfortunately its hard to get more instructors / lecturers and suitable workshop space at short notice.

Yeah its a balls, i had to deal with it during my apprenticeship and so have many others. Write to TDs etc if you want but at the end of the day you need to just keep the head down at get through it
