    Hi,

I am about to buy a 2015 BMW 520d M Sport from a BMW approved seller. Before finalizing the deal, what all should I check and confirm? Do they service the car and fix all the faults before selling the car including brake pads and tyres? The car had an odometer reading of 103000 miles. On checking the BMW service site, I cam to know the Particulate filter is required to be replaced between 125000 to 165000 miles. Should I get it replaced when I buy? I am really a newbie with the BMW. Any help will be highly appreciated .

    Thanks

What the dealer does to the car before you buy it is between you and them. The car should be in a decent state when sold i.e. there should be no known faults on the car. All the usual checks will apply. Feel the brake discs with your finger, you don't really want a big lip on the edge. Brake pads are usually visible by shining a torch in through the wheel. Most BMWs will give a warning on the dash when the pads wear down to 3mm anyway. Check if there is any oil seeping from under the engine or gearbox or real differential. Make sure tyres are in decent condition all around. Have a test drive and make sure the car drives fine and the gearbox is shifting smoothly. Check that all the in car electronics are working. Check that all exterior lights are working. Make sure all the bodywork is in decent condition. Do a history check on the car to make sure that the mileage is legitimate and there was no previous write-offs that you are not aware of. With the DPF, that mileage is just a BMW recommendation. I would be inclined to drive it on until the DPF gives trouble. Good long drives should keep it clear. Is there a warranty with this car?

Hi Mate, thanks for the reply.

Like I mentioned before, the car is buying from a BMW approved franchise, that means it carries 2 year BMW warranty. This is the whole point in my question, what all we should expect from a used car buying from the BMW approved franchise apart from the 2 year BMW warranty.

Btw, I cannot do a test drive or physical inspection before buying the car because the seller is 5 hrs away from my place. They will arrange the delivery, if the sale agrees.

    Thanks

    103k miles or kms?

The BMW 2 year warranty is brilliant and covers almost everything that can break (excluding consumables).

As for what you should expect them to do, I'd expect that the car has been serviced recently and that any work due now is done.

You could mention the DPF but as it isn't due yet, they would probably decline (unless you put it out there as a red line).

I've bought my last two cars from BMW dealers and on both occasions I was satisfied with the service history so pushed for a discount (and got it) and then asked them to throw in a set of roof bars (which I got).

Hi Seth, it is 103K miles. What was the brake and tyre condition when you bought the car? And for getting the bmw warranty, have you did the yearly service from the BMW itself? And for a 103K mile car, how much would be the avg yearly service cost?

    Thanks

Things to watch out for 100K miles + on BMW 5 series

Front tie rods (steering column) - about 270 or so to replace - depends on whether car was driven heavily or not ie heavy braking etc.

BMW autobox is recommended to have transmission fluid change at 100k --about 600-900 to get done from Independent.

Check the boot seals etc - seals are are not covered under BMWs 2 year warranty and any damage done from rain etc will not be covered..I found that out the hard way.

Hi Blazer, these is really informative.

For checking the front tie rod, do I need a mechanic? Does these covers under warranty. Like they said, if they are doing all the inspections and fixing everything as required, can I claim warranty later?

I will check the boot seals for sure.

    Thanks

the tie rods /steering links would be checked during the nct test. And you should get a new 2 year NCT with that car. Make sure that it comes with that.

I know one of my previous cars came with a one year NCT and it then failed for the tie rods and steering links as they were outside of the required tolerances. Both sides had to be replaced. Now this was a 3 litre m sport and I'd be pushing it on nicely etc all of which would added pressure on those parts. Normal driving wouldn't be nowhere as hard.

BMW covered it under the warranty. However I noticed that they changed the terms and conditions afterwards to exclude these repairs from an NCT test when I purchased another premium used card from a dealer.

Thanks a lot Blazer. I won't be able to test drive the car till it delivered to my home. Is it a safe bet to go for it? The asked price is around 21K for the car.

    Thanks

If its such a hassle for you to test drive the car because it's so far away, will you be able to get any warranty work done in another approved garage? I presume you're talking about main dealer purchase here?

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭appukuttan

Yes, I am talking about a main dealer purchase.

I think the warranty work can be done from any approved garage with in Ireland and UK.

Ragarding the routine service, I am not so sure how that works. Do I need to get the service done from the authorized service centers only? I am from Letterkenny, Donegal and we don't have any BMW approved service centers nearby

it seems a bit pricey for that mileage....looking at the site there's better options with lower mileage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭appukuttan

Ok. Its an M Sport varient. I too felt its a bit pricey.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,414 ✭✭✭✭Blazer

if it was the msport version and it had a good package range etc , full screen sat nav etc full usb audio services etc it would be worth it... but if you feel its a bit pricey go with your gut.

Then again I paid 23k for mine at the time.,.it was a 6 year old 525D (3 litre) and I sacrificed the msport package etc to get the bigger engine. Its whatever you're happy with.

What is your current car if you don't mind me asking?

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭appukuttan

My current car is an old toyota Corolla (2007). So its a big paradigm shift for me.

About the car, it is 520d M Sport Auto Transmission with paddle shift, BMW navigation. I don't know about the usb full audio services.

A 5 Series is not going to be as reliable or as cheap to run as a Corolla. The 2 year BMW approved used car warranty is probably the best available but be under no illusion you are paying for it in the price of the car. Also consumables like brake pads, discs, tyres, even a replacement batter will be way more expensive than you are used to with on the Corolla. These consumables will not be covered by any warranty.

but its a nice upgrade though Bazz :)

I remember coming from a nissan primera I brought new in 2005 to a 07 BMW 520D and I instantly fell in love with it...at least until I saw the Msport model when I came into work and then wanted that :D

but like Bazz said...be under no illusions..at the end of the day it was still a 50k car and thus parts are more expensive...brakes, calipers etc etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭appukuttan

Thanks Bazz and Blazer. I will try to negotiate on the price. Still I am only on a 50-50 mindset to buy. I want to know a BMW experience and the pride to own one, yeah its an expensive badge

EGR valve, Exhaust cooler and intake manifold - all known issues with this engine.

In Letterkenny your nearest BMW dealer is Martin Reilly in Sligo. There is also a very good independent BMW specialist in Kilmacrennan for any out of warranty work. For my last service I went to Bavarian Belfast, although there's also JKC in Coleraine and The Country Garage in Ballymena which would be a bit closer.

If I do the routine service and other checks with a BMW specialist, say Kilmacrennan, would that void the warranty? I see a lot of confusions over these.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭Technique

I would guess yes, but you should ask the seller for clarification.

Just go in with your eyes open OP. These cars are not cheap to fix if things go wrong outside of warranty. My approved 2014 F10 needed thousands in warranty repairs in my 1.5 years of ownership (new head unit alone was €1000). Sold it before the warranty ran out, lovely car in many ways but didn't like it enough to put up with any more problems.

There is a very good F10 UK forum where you will find a lot of good information.

    Hi Blazer,

The price was negotiated to €20300.

    Do you think 103K miles is too.much for a 2015 520?

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 38,783 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

To answer your question about the mileage, it depends on the service history. If it has been well maintained then 100k miles is nothing to it.

My last 520d (E60) had about 250k kms whilst my current (F10) has about 100k miles. In both cases they were perfect cars (although the E60 was starting to get a rattley chain and I had Valdas do the upgrade)

  • Registered Users Posts: 122 ✭✭appukuttan

I am getting a mixed bag of reviews when asking about BMW. Some guys advising me to stay away from BMs and others suggesting to go ahead with. I am totally confused. Now I learned many issues with the BMs than never before, lol.

Any car can have issues. However a 5 series was an expensive car to buy so issues could cost a bit.

That being said, with the different BMWs that I've owned, I had two big issues, both with the E60. The turbo went and was covered under the BMW 2 year used warranty. The other was the timing chain which I had the fix done during a service and didn't cost a huge amount.

If you're in any doubt then get rid of the car before your warranty expires.
