Surely it will be one final charge at the towns cup, held together with electrical tape and wintergreen

Any whispers on Kearney? Reckon he will try one last season or just call it a day?

I guess he needs to finish his career in EU technically for the taxbreak, but his Leinster days are over. Wouldn't make any sense for Leinster to have him on the books.

Maybe Pro D2 for a year to get the tax break, I can't see him signing with Leinster. He's back in Dublin for now it seems though

Kearney still has Top14 quality in him and D2 seems more dangerous for your health than the top level - I reckon if he goes it will be a T14 team.

Given his vast experience under a number of top line coach philosophies and his long career I suppose he would make a successful coach potentially.

Kearney could easily end up at London Irish for a season. I assume even though they are not in the UK, it still counts as Europe.

Pro D2 is now full of young French internationals. This is new agreement between the top clubs and the D2 clubs to get players experience so I wouldnt say it is dangerous. In Kearney case he would be exceptional at teaching this young players for France's benefit

Any time I've seen any Pro D2 on TV it's looked fairly "agricultural" in nature - Extremely physical with lots of big Saffers and Islanders but seriously lacking in pace or skills.

Maybe that's changing but it's always seemed pretty dour fair.

From listening to plenty of podcasts from players who've played in the ProD2, there's lots of pressure to play through injuries, too many physical midweek sessions and a general lack of care for the players. Over and above what they had experienced in the Premiership/Top14/ProWhatever.

Wow! Conan a Test Lion. I have to say I wouldn't have called that before the tour squad was announced. Fair play to the guy.

It's good to see Leinster doing better than Saracens - 3 starters to 2 starters and a sub.

Conan a test Lion and it’s possible in a Leinster team next season he loses out to Doris. It shows that it’s possible that some coaches just want different things from players and using being a Lion to show who the better player is is a bit loose.

On balance , if Doris hadn't gotten injured the Lions selection would probably have been reverse based on form before then.

Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of Jack Conan and Leinster are beyond lucky to have the kind of depth they have in the back-row. How often have both players been available for selection at the same time in the last 12-18 months.as well?

There's a certain amount of "what a coach likes" involved , but I think it's more a case of two fantastic players and the vagaries of poorly timed injuries and guys taking opportunities when presented.

Not sure it would be reversed and obviously we’ll never know but Conan seems to me like he was picked with a plan in mind. I’m certainly not sure who I prefer at 8 for Leinster especially as I think backrows need to be picked as units.

Think we've seen now for season after season that all the backrow players never seem to be fit at once. There always seem to be a couple with long term injuries at a given point in time.

Anyway, Conan had a bad injury at the RWC, he took a little while to get warmed up again after coming back from that, but since then he has been the best 8 in Ireland hands down. Deserves the start at the weekend and really hope he goes well.

Bath away is normally a great weekend. Great town and lots of good pubs and restaurants.

Think I'll give it a miss this year however.

Hugh Hogan will depart Leinster Rugby after eight and a half years to take up a role with Welsh outfit Scarlets.

Well this was a grand user name for quite a while but I guess I'll have to stop now.

It was always going to end this way for you.

His goose is finally well and truly cooked!

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

Provided that they all stay fit, and that's still a big ask, Leinster have a serious backrow. Conan had a fine display for the Lions today. He's still improving as a player at 28 too. Think we have to start counting him as one of the best 8's in the world currently.

Doris is the real deal, Ruddock was probably my Player of the Season and VDF wasn't far behind. There's Penney, Connors, Deegan and Leavy who all have designs on a starting spot as well.

At the moment I think I'd be thinking along the lines of the following for the back five of the pack:

    pusher lock: Jack Dunne

    jumper lock: James Ryan

    blindside: Josh Murphy

    openside: Will Connors

    no. 8: Jack Conan

    bench lock: Ryan Baird

    bench backrower: Caelan Doris

I genuinely don’t understand your obsession with Josh Murphy.

He’s a good squad player, but he’s nowhere near the level of Ruddock or Doris.

I think Murphy could be as good as Ruddock. He's a bigger man and if he could ever get his discipline in check, he could go a long way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

I'm a fan of Murphy. I think he had a very quietly effective season but two problems:

    1. His discipline is poor. He has no business in a first choice team until he sorts it out.
    2. He's 27 next season. Not a kid. He's not going to suddenly leap over guys like Ruddock. The scope for development just isn't there.

I've seen his skills badly let him down on occasion too.
