    25 acres of grass cut for hay

    Mowing = €20x25 acre=500
    Tedding = €10x25x4 times = 1000
    Raking = 10x25 =250
    Baling (Round )= 270 bales x € 7= 1890

    €3640

    Sell 270 bales for 25€ = 6750

    6750-3640=

    3110€ profit

    What figure am i missing here?, are my prices way out

    Thanks

    Fertilizer?

    Yous want a serious heavy crop to return 10 plus bales of hay to the acre

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,613 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    6-7 an acre surely ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 868 ✭✭✭mengele

    What would u get for the land in rent if u rented it out and never farmed it. Lets say 250 an acre. 250 x 25 = 6250. With no real risk in comparison to hay

    And OP is assuming that the weather is good enough for hay every year. If he had to double wrap it for haylage, draw it out of the field and stack it then it would fairly cut into the profits. Also hay is an easy draw whereas haylage is a different kettle of fish - less bales on a lorry and the possibility of it spoiling when the wrap gets damaged from loading/unloading.

    I'd have thought €7 to make a round bale of hay a bit on the dear side. €5 here.

    Selling hay for 30 euro and getting paid 30 euro for hay you have sold are 2 different things.

    It's easy enough to demand cash and you can give a receipt.
    we buy a good few bales of hay/straw and we pay in the field by either cash or cheque depending on the supplier's preference. We always give the supplier a purchase docket.

    Yea 5e is the price here too. 5 - 6 é would be fertiliser costs plus add in the the p's + k's going out the gate.

    I did the neighbour a favour and cut his 4ac heavy steamy paddock that hadn't been grazed all yr for hay this week. I got 20bales off it, or 5bales/ac, so 35e/ac baling cost using the 7e/bale, and add that to your 20+40+10 costs above, thats 105e/ac. I usually aim to pickup hay in years there is a big surplus for 20e/bale, that stuff I made cost me 21e/bale using your figures, I defo didn't make any money, and I certainly wasn't going to offer to pay for the standing crop lol, but it was something to do during a quiet week lol.

    The ps + ks would equate to 3 bags of 0-7-30 per acre, that will take a nice chunck of the profit.

    That rental figure is a little excessive from my experience.

    As Blaaz said there is the cost of the fertiliser.

    ...but also the land you grow it on doesn't come for free; if land was free everyone would be growing it. You have to factor in the interest on the capital cost of the land.

    Same as that here and closer to €400 as well.

    If you got 350 to 400, and kept the entitlements, you'd be a busy fool farming it yourself...

    €450 has been got about here but that was an exceptional price. €350-375 is going rate.

    if the land is fit for tillage would get €250 plus.

    it is tempting rather than what you get back from hay and cattle !! especially if working a full time job as well

    Spray
    Fertiliser
    Slurry

    Thats selling them out of the field too. You also need to ad in moving the bales if you do it. Storing them. Loading them again if needed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,150 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

    If you are selling hay or silage it value is relative to the market. It competes against other crops such as grains and beet. Transport is a huge hidden cost going against hay and silage especially if travelling a distance. The other factor that decides the price is volume for sale

    No far we will commit to buying silage or hay unless they consider that they will need it. There is rakes of surplus forage around at present especially in area's where land is good quality.

    Hay transport costs can be 5-10/ euro/ bale if going a distance. Even if transportation is done by oneself there is a cost due to machinery used.

    Do what's the value of it if I was buying in present market off the field I be paying no more than 20/ bale.....and it would want to be well saved hay
