Good Games to Play to Keep Things Interesting

    Hi All

    Anyone have any recommendations of a game to play for the below situation?

    Two day trip out west playing two links. 4 of us. A game that can be spread over the two days.
    • Should give everyone interest until the last few holes
    • We all can play our own ball
    • No Teams
    • Playing for money

    Straight Stableford or even playing fourball will end in the same result. Especially on Links.
    Looked up WolfHammer and it looks great but too much going on for it to be wheeled out first time on the trip.

    Thanks to anyone that has any reccs.

    The rules of Quota

    At the start of the round, a player subtracts their handicap from the number 36, and that number becomes that player's quota for the day. From there, the players in the game -- and it can be multiple groups -- set up a point system that's maintained without handicaps. Let's say 0 points for a bogey or worse, 2 points for a par, 4 for birdie and 8 for an eagle, or whatever you'd like.

    At the end of the round, the player who finishes with the most points above their quota wins. The winner can earn a pre-determined pot with players throwing in per round, or, for a much larger pot, losing players can be forced to pay the winner on a per-point basis based on the difference in points to the winner's total above their quota.

    Ties can be settled either via a match of cards, the number of birdies or better or some other measure -- or the winning money can simply be split.

    I know you said you don’t want teams but….

    If you’re all around the same handicap/skill level - American fourball is the best form of golf imo.

    1 point for closest the pin
    1 point for a birdie
    2 points for lowest individual score
    2 points for lowest team score

    If you get them all on one hole the points double.

    = 12 points. You can play €1 a point

    It keeps you trying on every hole.

    Might seem complicated but after 1 or 2 holes you pick it up.

    We do a Birdie comp.
    Everytime someone birdies, they put €10 euro in the pot, and eagle is €20.

    And its as simple as the last person to get a birdie takes the lot. So the last hole of the trip everyone is still in with a shout of winning a nice lump of money so there is always something to play for no matter what ****e you are playing.

    Me and mates like playing a game called "chaser".

    So basically everyone is playing for themselves. Lets call them Players A, B, C and D.

    Say player A wins the first hole. He is now 1 up on the group. If any of player B,C and D beat him on the next hole then the score is back to all square and so on and so forth.

    Probably best played as a flat match.

    Obviously if you're leading youre up against 3 other players effectively which means nobody ever gets too far out in front!

    Thanks for all the replies. There is a wide range of handicaps here so i think the above sounds great. It becomes 3 vs 1 on any hole when someone is in the lead and that sounds excellent.

    Might do scores after 9,18,27 and overall winner. Class

    You could just play skins if you're looking for something relatively straightforward? Means every hole has something to play for and if any holes carry over the pot can go up pretty quickly

    We do a version of this. Nett birdies though.

    The last player to get a nett birdie on the trip wins. If 2 players tied then the one previous counts. The amount of money they get can be done in various ways.

    This week 5 of us are playing as follows:whoever gets the last nett birdie gets paid €1 (which you can obv increase of you want a bit more action) for each nett birdie they managed during the trip (so you're accumulating as you go along). And they get paid that amount by each other player.

    We're playing 4 rounds so the winner is likely to get around €20 each from 4 other players.

    Whatever game you play you can always throw in additions such as sandies. Up and down from a bunker wins a euro.
    Maybe add in a euro penalty if you get a Sadam ( go from bunker to bunker) or a Hitler ( 2 shots in the bunker)

    I always love a skins game. There's a strong element of chance to it, which means even if you're not playing well there's always a chance you'll get lucky and get a couple of scores on the right holes. I'd tend to play for 50c/€1 a hole. If there's no clear winner on a hole the pot carries to the next, so instead of playing for €3 you're playing for €6. And in a fourballs there's a decent chance you'll end up playing a hole for €15 which is fun. Someone might have scratched the last 4 holes and then sneak in with a par for 3 points to steal the lot.

    And I also like that the game is never over. You'll never have a clear winner after 15 - even if you're a tenner down on the last you'll at a minimum be trying to pull it back to 7.
