Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Listening to Carnaby Street on 1368khz and an interesting "A cappella" version of Jennifer Eccles by the Hollies!!
It wasn't of course - just the left channel which contains the instruments was missing on mono AM .
    Enjoy the week end .

Also being relayed on 1494 kHz in Dundalk, local pirate. About 10 seconds behind 1368, which is about a second behind 648.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,386 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

The Dundalk pirate is still relaying Caroline this weekend. Now on 1615 kHz, they have used about 10 different frequencies, medium wave and shortwave over the years. Fairly strong signal on the SDR in Carlow, so they must have upped the power.

Hah is that you I see on the SDR listening now ?

Yeah stronger on the Megaloop FX than the Megadipol, the Megadipol is great for DX.

How do you know it's the Dundalk pirate ?

It's great the improvements they have made to the Kiwi SDR, SAM, DRM, really great to have.

Shame the audio quality on DRM is crap. Pity they choose really low bitrates.

It's 60 dB over 9 in Dundalk. And very strong on the second harmonic 3230 kHz. In previous times a few miles away in any direction, no signal on the car radio (1494 kHz).

Incidentally your SDR has a fairly strong signal from RTE 1 on 504 kHz, the second harmonic of 252.

Manx Radio AM (as well as Manx Radio FM) is available on the Radio Garden app ( http://radio.garden ). I wish I had thought of that before! That will be another way to pick it up. This might work online: http://radio.garden/listen/manx-radio-am/IT_RwpVd
    or just download the app.

We loose an hour between 5pm and 6pm on Saturday when Manx have their sport programme but 648khz skywave has just about kicked in by then .
I'm normally in an area of no internet for these week ends but not this time .!

Yes , Radio Garden is great fun !
Sadly not from the Ross Revenge again due to travel restrictions etc .
At least the water damage in the studios onboard hasn't caused too many problems with the equipment . Good old WD-40 !

I have been dipping in and out, yesterday and today, of this Radio Caroline North broadcast in conjunction with Manx Radio AM. Interesting to hear. I take it that the first program on the schedule (Carnaby Street) is the only one that was also on Manx Radio FM. Not that it really matters to me as I was using Radio Garden to pick up Manx Radio AM! I also gather that Carnaby Street is a weekly program on Manx Radio. I might listen to that again randomly on weekends.

EDIT: Incidentally, Radio Caroline AM 648 can be picked up on Radio Garden any time when the joint broadcasts are not on.

Declan - Carnaby Street is a must for me every Saturday morning and yes it is also on Manx Radio FM as well as 648khz during the Radio Caroline North week ends.
648khz does very well with just 1kw from Orfordness - there are sniffs of it all day on one of Mad lad's SDRs.

Haven't listened the last couple of months. They fact that they're all operating remotely and not from the ship definitely reduces the energy and atmosphere of the broadcasts. Hopefully they'll be back on the Ross soon!

Hopefully back on the Ross Revenge in June -- announced yesterday .
There has been a slight bit of water damage to the studios on the Ross which has been sorted -- a leak from above -- not salty water !!

I see so far this weekend Radio Caroline 648 are doing their own programming - not teaming with Manx Radio AM - for Radio Caroline North.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 607 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

Just checked 648khz and Caroline North is on there .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,171 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

From what I can make out, Radio Caroline North is largely broadcast on Manx Radio AM billed as Radio Caroline 1368, while Radio Caroline 648 have mainly their own schedule - going by Radio Caroline's website. For example, Pat Edison is on Radio Caroline 648 while Johnny Lewis is on the other frequency. I can pick up Manx Radio AM and Radio Caroline 648 on Radio Garden and heard both of them! It looks like later on this afternoon they may have the same programming.

It would be great if Steve Conway got involved again. He spent quite a bit of time on the Ross Revenge between 1987 and 1990, including spending time as Programme Controller. I know he was involved in Caroline's first foray into legal broadcasts later in the 1990s with it's restricted service licences (known as temporary licences here), and he was involved when it was broadcasting as a satellite station, and online for a while. Steve wrote about his "adventures" with his wonderful book Shiprocked. And let's not forget he happened to be on board when the Ross Revenge had to be rescued.

What's the frequency for the ship ? will listen out if I get the chance but they're probably only allowed stupidly low power ? I mean who cares today if BBC are leaving MW ? why can't they transmit at high power ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

They don't operate broadcast transmitters directly from the ship - 1368Khz @ 20KW is from Manx Radio and 648Khz @ 1KW from Caroline's own landbased site at Orfordness, Suffolk.

I was on the ship in 2004 when it was berthed at Tilbury for its 40th birthday weekend and they were operating directly on a temp licence with an allocated ERP of 1 Watt on medium wave. Lucklily 'supporters' all around the UK and Ireland oranised unauthorised relays from the webstream to give them the wider coverage they deserved - as far as I remember there were medium wave relays on air in Dublin and Waterford over that weekend.

I think that was the last time that there was a broadcast band signal sent from the ship - only really audible if you were in Tilbury at the time, but it sounded great pumped out of a PA system on the deck.

I was never great on British geography - I always answer well when watching 'The Chase' .... except for British counties, lakes, rivers etc :)

I was channel hopping last night and stopped briefly on one of the three satellite channels that were showing repeats of 'Classic Millionaire'.

I was shouting at the TV when Chris Tarrant asked 'The pirate station Radio Caroline was named after a daughter of which U.S. President? - £150,000 up for grabs with a choice of four presidents and the contestant didn't know!!!

Shouting at the TV is a sign of getting old.... as is knowing the answer to the question .... apparently.;)

Anyway,, back on topic - alarm is set for 08:30hrs tomorrow morning to hear Chris Williams with Carnaby Street from Manx Radio, before the long awaited Return to The Ross @ 10:30hrs.

Watch out for Facebook updates later today when the broadcast crew arrive on board and set up for the weekend ahead.

I am not sure if we can post Facebook videos on boards... but there is a nice short video on the Caroline Facebook page of Johnny Lewis making the return to air announcement this morning.

The first public visitors have also arrived for a tour around the ship.

There must be a fair amount of directional copper in the ground still left at that TX site - 648 is booming in (groundwave) onto online SDR's in Denmark, Norway and Sweden

I dropped in briefly to 1395 khz on Saturday morning in the car on my way to the North Pembrokeshire coast and Energy was there but not really strong enough when "up hill and down dale" .
I love the Caroline North week ends and 1368khz with it's 20kw (or is it 10kw ? Chris Williams always says 20,000 watts .) is such a strong signal here.

    Good to hear Energy.

The Dundalk pirate on 1494 kHz was not relaying Caroline earlier, but it is tonight Saturday 26 June. I can hear it with fading on the Carlow SDR, about 5 seconds behind 1368, at 10:48 pm. Massively strong in Dundalk.

Wonder how much do they pay for 1368?
There is an announcement that goes out after the broadcast explaining this is a commercial agreement.
