Named insurance and own policy

    Hi,

I was a named driver on my OH's policy for years, I bought a car last year and got the insurance in my own name. I have to buy a small van soon which I will insure in my own name, but can I say I have 6+ years claim free driving (but most was as a named driver) or just the 1 in my own name?

I haven't bought anything yet just trying to gauge prices online.

    Thanks

For a commercial policy, which you have to take on the van, you have zero insurance history. You can't use a private NCD on a commercial policy, you can hope that a company will mirror your private NCD but they don't have to.

BTW why are you buying a small van? They are more expensive to tax and insure than most cars these days.

Yeah I was looking at van insurance alright.

I occasionally make furniture and other pieces and a van is kind of necessary now if I want to take it more seriously. A small van because I've only ever driven small cars and don't fancy trying to find a parking space in an iveco daily or something.

You currently have zero no claims bonus as you were a named driver only.
But some companies may give you a discount for it. However, if you say you have 6 years no claims, they will ask for the no claims letter from your insurance to prove it, which you won't have.
