I don’t understand what the issue is with expressing a dislike for having militarized police roaming the streets? There is a time and place for those police units. Community policing on a Sunday afternoon is not that time in my opinion.

Yes and if it was just that they were wearing combats, I’d have no issue. They do not make me feel in anyway safer being there. The community Gardai in the high viz vests do. They have a laugh and intervene when needed. The public order unit is a nice way of saying riot police. Having them there creates a very negative atmosphere. Far more so than a couple of pissed up yobo’s from what I saw.

Yeah I don't like them too much myself tbh

I was out in Malahide a few weekends ago on the green outside the Marina and three van loads of them descended, telling everyone who was drinking to go home

Their "look" is very intimidating IMO

i have no problem at all in cities like Prague to have armed uniformed police walking the busy streets.
absolutely adds to a sense of extra security

When I was in Prague they didn't really stand out tbh

I think with the public order units here its because they look so different to "normal" police

It took me about 5 years to get used to constantly seeing police on the streets with firearms. It certainly doesn't make me feel better.

Anyway, public order units should never be seen until they are needed and quite often (though most definitely not always) their need is as a result of failure earlier on.

Yeah I think it definitely gives more of an element of "shíts about to get lairy" when you see the public order unit rolling in vs the usual patrol.

I'd like to see more Gards on the street. Both regular gards and the public order units. I'd love to see more of the public order unit walking around the city centre. Yes they are intimidating. Good. Get some law and order back in the city. And on the Dart and the Luas and in parks and at beaches.

I'd be in the same boat, much rather policing is visible but polite.

I remember in America it was visible but also quite aggressive and obviously well armed. That I wouldn't be in favour of.

On a separate note, Bob Odenkirk of breaking bad and Better call Saul fame has a new movie out called Nobody. It's a bit of a mix of 'John Wick' and the old Michael Douglas movie 'Falling down', not brilliant but a solid enough action flick and given the dearth of releases of late it's worth a gander.

I've found that generally police in the States to be quite polite and helpful. Being white and English speaking with a funny accent probably helped. They were certainly visible and intimidating which is what I'd like to see in Dublin.

Yup, very much enjoying it now. It does a fairly good job at explaining the story up to now for new or causal MCU viewers who might not have seen all 22 films previous to it but doesn't get bogged down in exposition to the point of annoying fans who have. Hiddleston and Wilson play off each other very well. Music and visuals really help make it feel like a film spliced into multiple episodes.

The only thing I don't like about it is that I watch it with the family and they make me wait until Friday evening ðŸ˜…

Nah, don't remotely agree. Police should never be intimidating unless absolutely necessary. We police by consent in Ireland and it is an important distinction.

Agree with the rest of your post, it's very well put together and whilst the themes are weighty they breeze through the exposition to keep you following. Some of the Rick and Morty writers are on board and given the nature of the story they were solid picks.

Reading between the lines I think he means intimidating in that you wouldn't mess with them, any of the times I've seen them they're generally larger units.

My experience of the US police was in reference to their demeanour when actually engaging with you individually or with groups which I thought was completely unnecessary at the time and not something I'd experienced elsewhere.

Definite nods to "Falling Down" alright. Thought the bus scene was top class and v original.

Maybe if the Irish soccer team won something.

Who are these mouth breathing window lickers you speak of Jaco? All 14 million Tory voters?

I can't say I've heard much about this song. Although I did see "Nazi Germany" trending on Twitter yesterday and it appears the hysterical left are claiming it is more evidence that the UK is going the way of Nazi Germany. Perhaps Venjur shares this concern.

All of it is nonsense...the song and the reaction. There are much more important things to worry about such as who will partner Iain Henderson in the Ireland second row at the 2023 WC.
