IKEA Karlby worktop treatment

First timer here with almost no DIY experience, unless you count woodwork in secondary school.

I bought a couple of IKEA's Karlby worktops to use as desks. They're particleboard with 3-4mm veneer. Their site mentions that they don't need any treatment and can be used out-of-box, but they don't feel like finished wood, or even fully sanded.

Can someone with prior experience give me any advise here? Looking for long-term durability over all else.

Two or three coats of matt or satin polyurethane varnish with sanding before the first and final coats.

Thanks! That's actually exactly what I'm in the middle of. Second coat this morning, still seems pretty streaky (going on kinda thick).

Eek. I did this on oak worktops (that I'd cut to size for desks) and I don't remember it being thick or streaky.

    Which varnish did you use?

    Hopefully it will be fine!
