We need Pat back tomorrow to tell us what we need. At this stage, I'm guessing a military central command based in the Stephen's Green SC, snipers on the roofs and a crack commando unit taking out troublemakers on the streets...with Eamon Ryan coming on to propose a counter initiative to get young people growing vegetables on their windowsills and eating salad for their outdoor summer.

Was Commandant Pat not on this morning? i had pictured him loading his blunderbuss from the rooftop of Communicorp Towers. He must be fuming.

Adjust your radios, tomorrow's broadcast will be pitched several octaves higher.

9:37 and we're talking about US conspiracy theories - naturally it involves Trump.

Pat really is obsessed. Must be a slow news day though.

Almost 20% of students were/are getting the PUP. That is significant!

Student is strategically coming off the PUP to qualify for SUSI grant next September, in fairness they lost their jobs and had rent etc to pay

I actually believe its far more, in fairness they did qualify based on the criteria but there'll be some shocks coming when SUSI grant's applied for.

It's nonsense to zoom in on students and part time work. That will be easily enough to resolve. I find trades people (including hairdressers) working from home and for cash and pocketing pup a lot more of an issue. Student stuff won't be long term problem but cash economy might have more long term effects.

I suspect some of contractors we use are happily pocketing supports despite high demands for work in our field (asking us to delay payment etc). It doesn't overly affect us because we don't directly compete with them but if you are a barber paying for the premises, taxes, insurance and rates and someone else cuts hair in their kitchen It's very hard to be competitive.

I do agree re the black market economy which has blossomed and its easy to set up in certain sectors and odd but definite side affect of the Pandemic. I also agree zooming in on students unfair. Sadly though there's been shocking smearing when it comes to the hospitality sector which started even before it opened. What's struck me is all these "Concerned Hoteliers" going on the Airways with outlandish claims that staff refusing to return to work. These concerned employers had the option of wage subsidy schemes but instead dropped staff like bad habits when it suited. Now they cry wolf when those very staff have moved on, moved home etc

Trump was happy enough not to outright dismiss q anon as cranks so that's on him.

As an earlier contributor said, interesting enough fluff piece.

However there are bigger issues that conspiracy theories.
State and Federal Lawmakers and legislatures are heading rightward, eroding a lot of recent liberal legislation.

Remember an early reference to the "Tea Party" who were perceived to be "Mom and Apple pie" - harmless people.
a lot of right winger zealots are in now prominent powerful positions, intending to refer more issues to The Supreme Court.
At least that is packed with reasonable peo..........

I met my first ever real life Qanon believer the other day.

Just 100% certain that the mainstream media haven't reported that Trump is actually still in charge of the military (something to do with medals on the jackets of the miliary guys in both Trump & Biden's inauguration photos), and he'll be back in charge of everything in August.

    It's really unsettling.

These kinds of guys used write to newspaper letters pages and most of them got no further than the bin. Or talking to anyone who'd listen in a bar.
Now they have the internet. And idiots following.

Worse, they have mainstream media outlets (Newstalk is only one small example in a wide international parade) broadcasting their nonsense.

Happily, today was the last segment in the current series. I hope PK has more sense than to return to advertising conspiracy theories in his next season.

Sometimes, daylight is not the best disinfectant, it's only free publicity. Shut the door on these idiots, altogether.

Except of course the conspiracy that MLK was killed by the mafia and FBI. Pat liked that one as would many of the audience as that is an OK conspiracy to peddle.

Someone I'm very close with (and her husband) have gone down this road. I'm not sure how far down it they have gone, as when she started sending video links and things to me last year, I let her know very diplomatically that I disagree with all of the logic behind it.

We're still friends but we don't interact so much as live in different countries and avoid these types of topics when we do touch base. Part of me is curious just where she is at on the whole thing but I'm half afraid that if we started discussing it we'd end up alienating each other.

Well, I don't subscribe to it, either, but it's probably more realistic than the notion of Democratic Party operatives, based in a pizza restaurant, harvesting children's adrenochrome.

There is no need to give oxygen to obvious BS. It credits their claims with a respectability that cannot be justified.

They're obviously outing these as completely bogus.
I think they are doing a service highlighting how utterly ridiculous these things are. I had an idea that Q Anon was a bit mad, but not how batsh1t crazy and divorced from any sort of reality it is.

Pat introducing Q Anon to his listeners, an audience which probably knows nothing about it.

This is due to his fascination with US media stories.

Our media only dying to introduce US style culture rubbish here.

So much air time has been spent on Trump to the detriment of issues around the world. It has led to a nation that only cares about what's going on in America and to a lesser extent, Britain.

Who is leading who though? The media is a business, it knows what sells. So much air time has been spent on Trump because that's what people wanted. You maybe more interested in other stories, but you are clearly in the minority because if you weren't those other stories would be getting more coverage.
