    Dopey question time!!
I’m not sure what the below article means in real terms for the normal traveller from Shannon.

“ AER LINGUS IS to lay off staff as it announces it is to permanently close its cabin crew base in Shannon”

Does it mean that Aer Lingus flights will no longer operate from Shannon?

No. They just won't have staff that are based and originate from there. It's common practice. Think of it as being a first stop on a bus route, but not the depot.

Ah ok. Will it potentially mean there will be less aer lingus flights operating from Shannon?

More than likely; there will be fewer flights from everywhere for a few years, but not being a base means it will be slower to recover in Shannon
