Non-EU licence, insurance and viability?

    My wife has a non-EU licence which is non convertible to an Irish licence, she will need to start afresh all the way from Theory Test to Practical and this could take a year or more and probably cost the bones of €1,000 when you factor in all the expenses etc.

    However apparently you can drive in Ireland for 12 months on the non-EU licence? My wife is a permanent resident of Ireland with full immigration status here and she came to live here over 3 years ago but never drove here only a few times with a rental car.

    Has anyone ever gotten insurance for a non-EU driver like this? My wife is mid-thirties and over 10 years driving experience and one previous at-fault accident in her own country. Who should I approach that specialises in this and what sort of money might I be looking at for cover for her? We are thinking to buy a 2012 Toyota Prius this week we saw for a competitive price.

    If she's here 3 years she can't drive on a Turkish licence. Well past 12 months.. She needs to do tests for Irish licence

    Makes no difference where she's from. Once you've lived here for 12 months your non EU licence is no longer valid, so you have to get an Irish licence.

    Forget abiut the insurance, as a resident her foreign licence will butter no parsnips here. She will need to get a learner permit before she can get behind the wheel on a road. There was a prior permission for foreign licence holders to drive unaccompanied on a learner permit for a period of tike. However, I think that was either modified or was restricted to a certain time after residency. Hopefully she will be able to get the learner permit/theory test out of the way soon.
