Socially distanced or sit down gigs, bars using the Scandinavian model, young people working from their bedroom, one of the few opportunities to meet a partner is online, wearing masks on public transport in case we get a cold... That sounds grim as hell.

Having spent some time in Norway, the bars did seem a bit quieter... because people were getting absolutely plastered at house parties. Do you think this is what they meant by the Scandinavian model? :,-)

That said, they do seem to drink outside more. We could use a few more beer gardens.

Trying not to get angry here! But would NPHET just fûck off! This variant ****e needs to be nipped in the bud! It’s doesn’t evade vaccines, but yet they say it might. We know it doesn’t so fûck off! Don’t threaten people that we’ll look at restrictions just in case crap! The country is administering 300k doses of vaccine a week now, it’ll totally outstrip any case number and plus the majority of the vulnerable that could end up in hospitals won’t because they’re fully vaccinated!

This needs to stop. UK proceeding at full speed towards their full opening on June 21st. I have no idea what this negativity is about.

Gotta keep up the undercurrent of caution, couldn't allow people to have some hope.

Vaccines work, were vaccinating away, get on with it ffs

Data from the UK, of the 9 trial events for mass gatherings held recently, 60,000 attendees, 15 cases detected.

Safe to say the trial went well

Are there any accurate figures for the number of vaccines administered?

Yeah, I've no interest in hearing from Holohan either.

Not outside of a full public inquiry anyway.

Yeah very good to see, gives great hope for the near future

Lets hope Ireland's versions go as well, would there be a danger of our officials wanting 0 cases from the events ?

When do NPHET declare the crisis over?

Realistically it ended when the vulnerable were vaccinated in Ireland, but it’s certainly over now, with the numbers in hospital and the numbers vaccinated.

Who blows the whistle to end the game?

Why is he concerned, the vaccine is proven to work against it, and its not any more contagious.

No, not really. Easy enough for someone to manually tot up what's being done in the MVCs, but there's no reasonable way to collect the data from GPs until the IT system is back up.

Although Tony Holohan's warning seems somewhat out of kilter with where we are, I can see the reason for his concern.

There's the potential from when we open up further in early June that the dogs will be let loose and people will go socialising as normal again. Which, like it or not, can lead to a massive surge in cases because we won't be anywhere near herd immunity at that stage.

The closer we are to having all 60+ fully vaccinated, the closer we are to people saying, "That's grand now, all the vulnerable are vaccinated", and taking more risks with the public health guidelines. I can see it all around. I can feel my own brain going down that road.

The odds are that the weather in June coupled with only outdoor dining & boozing, should be enough to keep it at bay. But if we were to have a very wet June (it can happen), then there should be some genuine concern about what could happen.

Everyone needs to STFU about variants unless the following is true:

The variant is proven to be significantly more deadly than normal and/or is proven to be significantly more resistant to current vaccines.

Increased transmissibility is completely irrelevant now.

I really really do hope that were at the end of this so we can get on with things. I just cant help thinking that with all the twists and turns that covid has one last kick in the bollocks for us especially with the Indian variant and the Yorkshire variant I read about this morning.

    Hope not I really do.

The "double mutant" Yorkshire variant ?

From Sky news timeline timeline timestamped 12.53
New 'Yorkshire variant' investigated with 49 cases confirmed

Public Health England has said it is investigating another new variant after 49 cases were identified, mostly in Yorkshire and the Humber region.

So far, there is no evidence that it causes more severe disease or renders the vaccines less effective, it said.

Downing Street said the situation will continue to be monitored.

Boris Johnson's official spokesman said: "There have been a number of variants throughout the pandemic and there will continue to be so. There are three mutations of the B1617 strain, as I think has been discussed previously, but as we do with all variants where we spot and identify them through our genomic sequencing programme, we will continue to monitor them and we will designate them as variants under investigation, and then variants of concern if we deem them to be of greater risk.

"But again, as you've seen throughout the pandemic, that's what we've done and we won't hesitate to put in measures that we think are necessary to try and tackle the transmission of any variants."

Asked whether the discovery of the new variant would have an impact on the next stage of restrictions lifting on 21 June, the spokesman said the five-week gap between measures relaxing would allow the variant to be monitored.

He added: "As the prime minister has said, we will continue to look at all the statistical evidence and data, and we'll set out our plans as soon as the data allows."

That's the difference between here and the UK, whatever you think about Johnson he is in charge of the response to the pandemic there.

Mr Martin should be to the fore here instead of hiding behind Mr Holohan letting him give the bad news which should NOT be the case.

This did NOT need to be communicated as if we were facing armageddon ffs!

Next we will be thinking whats the point of getting these vaccines if there is no guarantee they will work as they are supposed to!

This is a problem now when you have people listening to this crap and they will turn around and say sure what’s the point in the vaccine if it’s not working or proven to work against different strains.
Constant fear even after we were told the vaccine should be affective in this case.
A lot of people listening to him only want to hear the bad news , what have they against the hospitality industry when you can see already they are looking or thinking of ways to keep them closed.
They are increasingly sounding like they couldn’t care less if hotels , restaurants and pubs remained permanently closed which is a very strange stance for any government to take.
