When she was going through the paper rubbish she was essentially on a treadmill.

Not sure running brings out the best in a singing voice. Thats why all the other acts sing while the back up crew do the running I suppose..

I honestly didn't get the staging. No doubt they spent a fortune on it, but it came across as the opposite.

The song was called Maps anyways. How exactly did the staging relate to Maps or did I miss something?

Fully agree, i saw some article where she says its a journey or some such thing.

It was bleedin awful is what it was...

I personally think that our biggest problem is the bunch of eejits allowed to pick and plan this. Just stick a half decent act with a half decent song (even a non traditional eurovison song) on stage, even if the just sit and sing it would be better.

Her voice was poor, song seemed poor and the production was rubbish.

    Frank and Walters

The problem is no established act is willing to do it. Britain inherited Wogan's cynical Eurovision views and it subsequently rubbed off on us. Any anyway it's the song above all else that matters most.

The drummer is my neighbour so I’ll ask him.

We can't really blame the Brits for Wogan in fairness

I know? I wasn't. He should've given up Eurovision a long time before he did, he pretty much single handedly turned a lot of the UK public against it with his increasing disdain for the contest. A lot of people over here watch the BBC coverage and have bought into the narrative over the years.

He became one so we probably can. Not a shred of Irish in the man.

Not a shred of Irish in the man.

I disagree with that, and believe he was a very proud Irishman. Remember he went to England at a time when the Irish were treated with disdain, so it wasn’t exactly the done thing for the Irish to be singing loud and proud of their Irishness….

I will certainly be raising a glass to Terry during song 9 on Saturday.

Come, come now Reg. He loved the Eurovision but he couldn't take it seriously.

Tell him it's an easy gig....you aren't allowed to play instruments lol

Ireland is a more cosmopolitan society than it was the last time we won Eurovision. I see none of that reflected musically in any of our entries of recent years.

I'm a "senior" music listener, my tastes are mainly in the area of classic rock/ blues and the like, but I'm open minded and open eared enough to recognise that the dominant styles of pop music are based in RnB, rap, hip hop and related genres.

The mysterious cohort within RTE who handle our Eurovision entries are still wedded to guitar clutching singer songwriters, long after that musical ship has sailed and we don't even do the singer songwriter stuff particularly well.

Further up the thread someone mentioned Denise Chailla and there was an immediate response of " she wouldn't be interested ".

My question is, has she ever been asked to contribute, as a writer, co writer, performer, producer, talent scout, whatever.?

I'm not saying she's the absolute answer, but she's a good example of the kind of young Irish talent we should be drawing on.

Switzerland the best by a long shot this year for me. Will be interested to see the staging for it.

The clips I saw of the staging were not great....

I actually think the idea of a semi final might put a lot of established acts off competing in the contest. It’s probably a bit cringe for a well known name to be sent home and not make the final, particularly when a lot of them might feel that Eurovision is beneath them and they’re only doing it because their career is on the wane. A lot of performers have big egos, whereas an unknown has nothing to lose and would have the time of their life taking part in the whole Eurovision madness.

Probably a typo. Same person did Heroes for Mans

U2 released Rattle & Hum...... and then years later released Songs of Innocence.

The point is just because someone creates something good once, it doesn't mean everything they create afterwards will be as good as that 1 good thing they did...

Thinking about it... the staging needed two people. One person lost in a maze listening to the song which is the Map(s) to guide them out of the maze. Let the other person do the treadmill stuff and leave Lesley Roy to focus on singing.

I do think if they scaled back the staging gimmick a bit it would have looked well. The rehearsal clips released of her swatting the paper houses and walking through the street looked well. They just didn't have to have a full 1 minute 15 seconds, they could have used screen, other people, etc to cover the rest and it would have put less pressure on her and she could focus more on her performance. It didn't have to be wall to wall paper props.

The "breaking the 4th wall" bit at the end just ended up being a damp squip, as many pointed out on Liveline and others she really came alive in that final bit where it was her belting the final notes.

Get a performance artist or dancer to move around the forest with a bit of grace rather than just running on a threadmill.

If they do a new "Song for Ireland" I reckon we should enter someone.
Itll be a collab like Snakes on a Plane

The ones I am looking forward to tonight.

San Marino with Flo Rida! The song is catchy.

Greece, seriously catchy dance pop song, like the staging.

    Serbia, trashy pop it's fun.

Finland, I can see this one shooting up the betting odds, people who like a bit of nu metal/linkin park might like it

Gutted Iceland won't be live :(

    Also....Switzerland not getting the hype.

The Denmark song is awful they had some much better songs in their national final! Like the below

Just imagined something like Maddie Ziegler from Sia's videos dressed as a mini Leslie and it's a metaphor of her navigating through her life etc. Done right I think that could work out well, and again it takes the pressure off Leslie while giving her something/someone to interact with still.

Next year the team should consult with Boardsies on the Eurovision thread :pac:

Sounds a bit like Akram Khans bit at the 2012 Olympics but with some trees

I'll always give an extra thumbs up to any country singing in their own language.
I really do not like the mangling of English in most of the entries
This year, that included Ireland's effort btw ;-)

Switzerland and San Marino are my two favourites tonight.

I have a crush on Moldova and have had her/Kirkorov's song stuck in my head.

Portugal is underrated and may sneak into the final.

Bulgaria has improved from last year and Georgia will be different.

    Enjoy the show!
