Job offer: starting salary scale query?

    I've been offered a job and sent a contract to sign which states a specific salary scale. Money wasn't discussed at the interview stage or before the offer was made verbally.

    The original job advert says the salary scale (X-Y) is "negotiable at point of entry depending on the candidate's skills and experience."

    The 'negotiable' part isn't included in the contract proper, just the range.

    Handbook says salary will be reviewed annually based on performance.

    Stupid question, I'm sure, but not used to this: how do you negotiate the starting salary before formally accepting, ie. signing the contract?

    And if you quote them a figure, do you stay on that or does it increase incrementally to the upper limit?

    Appreciate any advice.

    Just say you’re very excited by the offer but need to discuss starting salary before accepting.

    You know what the range is so be ready to argue your case for what you want.

    ...and if needed, emphasise that the job advert stated "negotiable at point of entry..."

    ...now you'd like to negotiate!

    If they won't, take it as a bad sign!

    I don't know how they can expect you to sign the contract unless you are prepared to take the lowest amount in the salary range. I'd tell them you can't sign it without knowing the actual salary amount.

    Well you can bet they think they are getting you for the lowest end of the scale. You need to ask for the highest end to get the middle.

    Don't think it's being cheeky, it's the only way you will end up without getting the low end. If you ask for the middle theyre gonna negotiate lower.
