Also I don’t understand why the “game that changed my life” podcasts are preceded with a 20 minute news chat. Surely they should be ringfenced as “listen anytime” pods like the players chair?

My dad is an athletics nut, he was mad to listen to the Marcus O’Sullivan chat and had to wade through Ken and Eoin talking premier league ****e first. It did feel like this week needed a general podcast, maybe half soccer half hurling or something which would have tidied up the running order an awful lot.

People want soccer chat.... it should always be at the start of every podcast

    Soccer is popular.

The beauty of the audio beds is that it’s really easy to skip a subject if you’re not interested - just smash that forward button till ya hear music! Gotten me through more than a few rugby slots.

Don't forget that a library, even if it's over designed or polarising design or whatever still has a core function of being a library. This white water rafting suggestion has no clear need to fill, and clearly no surveys or consultation with locals to see if there is a need has been carried out either.

What do people expect the locals to say if canvassed? Of course they'd love it! I remember back in my youth going ice skating in Dolphin's Barn, just doing well to stand up, whilst the 'locals' were whizzing past me backwards. Would've probably been pie in the sky stuff to put a skating rink there at one point too. This seems like an idea Dublin just doesn't know it wants yet.

Yep Im starting to figure out that I’m in a huge minority in wanting less Ken and more soccer free podcasts.

I’ll just stick to skipping forward.

No idea, but that's the point. They haven't asked.

I'm not proud to say that my general pettiness has prevented me from ever listening to the Liverpool title winning audiobed...

But you don't know where the audio beds are going to be in the podcast.?

Timestamps would be something so easy to implement.

    0-10mims Kens report on sport
10-20 mins Jonathan Wilson and Miguel Delaney chat.
    Etc etc.

Time stamps in the podcast description would definitely be useful alright. My point though is that failing that, the audio beds are a quick easy read on when the next segment is coming up. Just keep tapping the 30-second skip until you hear music - they’re pretty much all longer than 30 seconds anyway so you’ll always land on it at some point.

Failing the logical thing that most podcasts of this ilk do. Instead we get the same 2min+ audio beds with no idea what is coming after.

0-10 mins report on sport!? More like 0-50 report on sport, 50-80 guest talk about same things ken just waffled on about!

I was just countering the poster who said the audio beds were a great idea for getting to the next section when skipping forward multiple times. My point was its not that great of a system. Other podcasts just had timestamps in the description of the sections which makes it super easy.

A really good audio bed remains relevant even when the circumstances change. That Liverpool bed (with The La's music) really caught me at the end of last week and I'm a Southampton supporter.

The Arsene Wenger one gets me even though I'm not a supporter. Something about the juxtaposition of Martin Tyler commentary when they won the league at Old Trafford, and the gobsh*tes of Arsenal fan TV calling for his sacking, with a bit of Sinead in the background, is jarring. It really portrays the two Wenger eras very clearly.

Just can't take to Miguel, find myself drifting off when he is on. He's quite knowledgeable and comes across decent enough but he's just a bit bland.

He says a lot, not much of it is of any substance though. It feels like he never gets off the fence to give any form of a personal opinion.

It's a lot of "someone was telling me"

Most of his journalism is him pretending to have the inside track on stuff, when in reality it's always guff

You are right, the timestamps are very handy.

I enjoyed that players chair. That Meath team was just a few years before I really remember so I don't remember Hayes as a player but was aware of him and his story.

From a human perspective rather than a sporting one, it was a fascinating interview. How he and his father never mentioned the brother once after his death was astounding.

Quite refreshing to hear of a player like that having no interest in the team or reunions post retirement when there was no falling out or no bitterness with a manager/county board/teammates. Just interesting to hear a different outlook on a career.

It was exceptional. Searing honesty and insight, worth the sub alone for that interview.

Brutally honest interview, uncomfortable at times. The straight talking from Hayes was incredible.

Thought the Liam Hayes interview was brilliant, kudos to both himself and Richie.

As a Meath man who was born just at the height of that great Meath team, I do not remember Liam Hayes play, but I do have stories from my dad about him and that Meath team and they remain huge legends to me, ever since I first stepped onto a pitch and wanted to emulate these mountains of men, and the subsequent 1996 & 1999 team which I remember better. His comment on stopping Dublin was particularly poignant, bearing in mind the ease at which they have brushed us aside the past 10 or so years...a few hardy "stoppers" is what we need!

As a child, my dad had told me about his brother committing suicide at the goalposts in Skryne, and it is a story I remember with horror, but Liam brought it to life so vividly in the interview, and summarised hugely how suicide is treated in Ireland, and tragedy in general I suppose, and we do need a proper conversation about it as a country.
Sadly, it affects every community in Ireland and now more than ever, we should be considerate of our family members, friends and colleagues. Everyone is facing their own battles and I implore people to please reach out if they are ever feeling down...it is not in any way cowardly or a lack of "manliness" (sorry, I know suicide affects men and women but I do not have the correct vocabulary to express this).
Probably not the best forum for this so apologies if it breaches the rules but I just felt it needed to be said, considering the subject was brought to light on this latest episode.

Once again, brilliant stuff from Richie and team.
The Player's Chair is an episode I always look forward to...especially as it isn't just a chat about a sports career, but often goes deeper.

    Great interview alright.
I suppose I don't want to take the thread off topic too much but what exactly is a "proper conversation" about suicide?
I don't think theres ever been more "awareness" or even conversations about suicide and mental health but the situation on the ground doesn't seem to be improveing. If anything things look to be going backwards.
Maybe it is the job I am in but I see an awful lot of young people with psychological issues, fine young people who, when they are on top of things, could achieve a lot, but get setbacks way too much of the time.
A proper conversation isn't going to help them or the many thousands more like them, neither is "awareness".
Action has to be taken - and perhaps it is being taken but I read somewhere that we are sorely lacking in Child Psychologists and other types of mental heal professionals and services in this country - these have to improve.

I don't know what is happening at secondary school level - I assume plenty mental health awareness and wellbeing is taught - is it enough?

Again, sorry for the mini rant and off topic.

His views on how to “stop” modern Dublin were nonsense. A lot of red cards and a double digit beating would ensue if you used his ideas of resorting to physical violence. If that’s all he has to offer on the modern game I’m glad he doesn’t write on it anymore.

It's amazing that that's your take away from the interview.

I’ve an antenna for bull**** and that was bull****.

I realize the main focus of the interview was more ethereal issues but if Roy Keane came on second captains and said that not enough opposition players tried to break man city players legs he’d be called a joke. I don’t see why Hayes should get a pass.
