My god, I just had a look and Beshoffs have some beautiful stock.

I see they have a 2018 golf R at 40k. Maybe you could convince her that’s a better buy!

Yes, they have 3 Ferraris and a 720S in the front window at the moment. Walking around and comparing each model the 720s is streets ahead of the Ferraris from a looks department anyway... Things must good at the top of the market.

Unfortunately she wont go for a R, she has seen my GTI's in the front driveway for to long at this stage...

Anyway I think the fact that the E-coupe is a 3 year old Diesel at 42K is a deal breaker. A new CLA at a few €K less is probably the way to go for her... Ill drop a few pics when we do something...

    PS, still loving the 330e...

It's like when Britney Spears shaved her hair off, loads of people went mental, if Susan Boyle did it people wouldn't care as much.

    LOL :D

Its not so much the huge grille thats the issue on the bmw, its the design of it.
The lexus grille at least looks like its part of the original design. The bmw 4 series in particular looks like a cheap aftermarket front bumper with the bodywork fibreglassed up to a grille that came off something else.

I get what you're saying. Previously companies would make their own hideous body kits for cars but now there's at least one company out there making a front bumper for this M4 to BMWise it.

The top one is apparently in the works by some company in Germany I think. Bottom one is just a render.

For BMW it's still a work in progress. In a few years.....

What I don't understand is why people are so up in arms about the front of the M4 when clearly the Lexus is on par with it if not overtaking it with regard to the HUGE grille.

Theres far more talk on here about the m3 than any Lexus. And its the design is the problem, not the size. Audi probably have bigger grilles than bmw and merc might too but they don't look like the goofy kid in primary schools whose front teeth grew far quicker than the rest of his body. Bmw used to have a nice tidy grille.
I think the Lexus grille is horrible on that car, so I agree with you there. The rest of the exterior is nice, I don't like the interior just from the photos. I'm sure it's well put together though.

Everyone is used to the Lexus grille by now, the same will happen with the BMW one just like the Bangle era grew on everyone. Be grand.

I like the Lexus spindle grille, looks like it was meant to be there and is much, much prettier than the M4 one.

Yeah I agree with this. We will just get used to them.

I am enjoying the 330e too and don't miss the 5 series at all.

I wouldn't be keen on the CLA personally but can see your point about the e class age and being diesel.
Here's a CLA model that is rare in Ireland.

Have to say I'm really not a fan of the recent Mercedes interiors at all. I think audi and bmw are well ahead in that department.

Not a fan of how the centre screen and digital cockpit look like 1 large screen going half the width of the car, but I do like the rest of the interior. Lower down, I like the open pore wood they use.

I don't like the minimalist look of the new s class and c class either with huge central portrait screen and lack of buttons. Almost tesla esque.

I think the larger audis interiors is the best of the lot now....a6/a7/a8/q7/q8/etron....but I believe the lower screen is inferior to use than physical buttons. I'm still going to buy one of that generation a6 or at a push an a7 though...not a huge fan of the a4/a5 and below interior but have to admit I've only seen them in pictures and videos but reviewers rave about them.

Bmw doing nice interiors now, all the way through their range.

Audi seem to have seen the error of their ways with the dual touchscreen layout as their latest models A3, Q4 and etron gt have reverted to physical controls for climate and heated seats.
I think Mercedes interiors can look nice but the quality is below Audi and BMW.
Lower spec models at the bottom of their range look really bad with the standard smaller screens.
If you look at carwow reviews etc. The trim is cheap and not solid at all.

Ya the base versions of the mercedes interiors
are poor. Its a great concept imo and the current cls is stunning inside but jump into a base e class of a couple of years old and its more shiny plastic than screen.

My folks recently got a 192 Merceds E220d. The interior is really nice IMO. Lovely materials including the open-pore wood, nice layout and it has the screens going from the centre console across to the driver's side. It's a lovely place to be.

Bmw interiors are not as hi-tech or modern looking as audi or Mercedes but build quality is better. You won't find a single piece of cheap plastic trim anywhere in the car and the materials used feel bulletproof and well built. Porsche are a step above again, very classy.

I personally prefer the conservative styling in the current bmw interiors over audi and definitely mercedes.

Totally agree, the Mercedes interior looks amazing but isn’t very intuitive to use and can look a bit cheap.
The newer Audi’s like the A6 and A7 interior is just awful, too many screens. A friend with a new A7 hates using it. I did see on their new RS Etron that it’s back to a single screen and buttons so perhaps Audi is listening to its buyers and fair play to them if they are. Shame BMW are making such horrible looking cars though!

Such a balanced post has no place on this forum! You have praised and criticised all 3 German brands equally without bias for any brand shining through!

    Super review Mark.
Think I’d prefer M3 though if I had to choose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

I'd agree with you there, but I much prefer the sleeper versions of the m cars.
E46 m3 was a cracker, absolutely gorgeous. Subtley but not too subltey different from the standard range.
I suppose m3 is there more restrained in looks these days and the m4 is the shouty one for people that want that.
Looks and design trump performance for me, I don't find it good looking at all, so that m4 doesn't do it for me in an aspiration to own one sense. Even if the 430d or 430i looked like that I wouldn't buy one.
I'm sure it's an impressive looking machine and very striking in the metal and has serious presence though.

I couldn't drive a car with that colour, far to stand out and attention seeking. I do like the M4 but would go for a more traditional colour.

The M3 would also be what I'd go for, in saying that I would want to go for the xdrive M3 as well

Agree. I would have the x drive too even though it’s probably heresy to many on a M3.
That said if I was dropping this sort of money on a car I probably wouldn’t buy one of these in the first place.
Did you order the x5 45e?

I did yeah on the provision that I get the 5k grant, if I don’t get that I can pull out. Not that confident at the moment that it will come through, which will be annoying as I’ve made a custom order.

Reading online as well that BMW have a parts shortage and are not able to fulfil the Harmon Kardon and comfort access which would be really annoying. But let’s see what happens

I have always been a BMW fan but it’s getting more difficult to be a fanboy when their new designs are so bad.
Just look at the state of that M4 Mark reviews!
    I’d love one

Most cars are still nice but the direction they're heading means it might not last long. The 3 and 5 are still lovely and they may or may not keep them looking like they should.

It's just the grille design really. Not much else wrong with their cars. Not a fan of the m4 but it's a niche low volume model, in Europe anyway.

I saw an x7 for the first time in the wild, it was horrendous. Way too big and the proportions all wrong. Looked absolutely stupid.
    Again though, a niche model.

Yeah totally agree, the 3 and 5 still look good, retaining the acceptable grill size. The 4 I'm just unsure of. It's striking, that's for sure. But the 1 is just shockingly badly designed. They really messed that one up, for a supposedly sporty hatch it almost has an mpv look about it with the high sloping bonnet.

That M4 is a monster of a yolk and a bit of a head scratcher in the design. It looks aggressive and menacing but overdesigned too. I wonder in a year or two will these new designs be accepted and people will remember them fondly later on like the E60 era cars...
