Polyscias - Aralia near death

bought a polyscias (aralia) about late March (pictures attached). Followed the lighting instructions placing it near a south facing window to get some hours of light. Watered maybe a bit too often. Only started feeding the last while. Its now nearly dead, the branches seem to have turned black and all the leaves have…

Its now nearly dead, the branches seem to have turned black and all the leaves have fallen off.

Is it a lost cause, any ideas what went wrong?
There seems to alot of contradictory advice online about this plant and what it likes..

They don't like direct sunlight and need little and often watering.
That looks to be overwatered perhaps,

Cut back any obviously dead leaves or stems.
