Driveshaft shortening and balancing, Dublin

    Hi Folks,

    I need the driveshaft for the Mustang shortened and balanced, however I brought it to a place that specialise in such things in Dublin but they said that they probably wouldn't be able to balance it because of the diameter and that the yoke was not something they could put on the machine, however they said they would ring me back on Tuesday, maybe they can come up with something. TBH if they can't balance it then there is no point in getting it shortened (as it would shake the car apart on the motorway!), and I would have to get a new balanced one from the US.

    Has anyone been in a similar situation here, surly I'm not the only one to get a classic car driveshaft balanced in Dublin?

    There aren't many places left that do that sort of work so it would help if you told us where you tried first.

    Can't help with anyone local but FWIW I bought a new shaft off Dunning and Fairbanks in Leeds for handy money a few years ago for my scimitar.

    I assume you went to/ tried Drive Shaft Services on the Long Mile Road,

    and then there is Charleville Driveshafts too.

    Naturally both companies focus mainly on heavy and light commercial, but its worth an enquiry.

    I can't imagine your driveshaft being much smaller than that on some light commercials

    You could also call some general precision automotive engineering companies and ask them, they might advise you where to go if they cant do it.

    Maybe High Precision Motor Products in Tullow, or Westward Engineering in Enfield.

    Failing that talk to people in motor racing circles, they might know of somewhere

    Thanks for the input, just want to wrap this one up, Drive Shaft Services were not able to either shorten the driveshaft or balance it. They were not set up for either (in fairness they were quite responsive and explained things well even if they couldn't help).

    Might be a bit of a blessing because when I did (a lot) more digging, it turns out that the drive shaft is a two part affair where one part is pressed into the other with a rubber sleeve between the two, meaning that balancing depends on how good that rubber sleeve is and it's getting on in years!

    So long story short going to get a new one from the US, right size and pre balanced.
