With the amount of festivals rescheduling because they can't get insurance, I'd be wary of the difference between "allowed to open" and "open"

loads i've seen are saying they are confirmed as definitely going ahead in England, so instead of a "summer outdoors" in Ireland my summer will be a "summer in England" enjoying things ive badly missed like clubs and festivals and being able to drink indoors without restrictions.

Didn't realise festivals are going ahead in the UK, more power to them. But from what I've seen on social media, a lot of the "high profile" ones aren't going ahead? (virtual rubbish doesn't count) Maybe, it's smaller gigs/festivals that are allowed?

When boris announced June 21st everything opens, a lot of festivals announced they were back on, then they realised they couldn't get insurance. Boomtown and 2000 trees have both announced they're postponed till 2022 because of it.

I know someone intending to go the Leeds festival which is confirmed as back on, which must be one of the biggest.

The indoor reopening in the North on May 24th seems to have got a reaction down here

When pubs open they won't be bothering with €9 meals and might keep the 2 hour limit for a week or so after the novelty wears off. The 2 hour limit is good for them when busy because it keeps a steady flow of customers. When that falls off they will be back to normal.

And don't for one second think a pub will refuse your custom because you don't have a vaccine certificate :pac:

There could be a market for such a covid free pub!

Thankfully the information I was told before is/wasn't true at all.

Much needed light. We all need this

I think the public have forced EL Tonio's hand, better to have small groups in a controlled environment with toilet facilities enjoying a beer over the June Bank Holiday weekend, than thousands crammed together outside take away pubs and every town park supping cans and pissing in Mrs Murphy's garden.
If 24th May is confirmed, I will bow to the people who filled the public areas last weekend.
    Thank you.

The government are finally admitting that they made up the €9 thing all on their own and it had no basis in fact.

That was always obvious as they could never explain where they dreamt it up from.
I always it assumed it was to stop people going on pub crawls. Worked where I was concerned anyway!

24th May outdoor, no indoor for June. Indoor for July according to latest reports.

Buzzing with all the positive signs coming out and nice to see that farce of a €9 food rule gone and now will they answer what was the scientific point of it all ? (thanks to a poster here we know one of the reasons was so gastropubs could open and act as restaurants etc)

Let's hope places are stay open and no more lockdowns ever ever

    I can live with that

There wasn't a scientific point to it, it was admitted as much at the time. It was to stop everyone getting hammered and swinging out of each other.

Been discussed here plenty of times

That experiment failed miserably in some places

That’s the exact reason. It was actually the vintners who made the argument that pubs that served food should be allowed open as a restaurant.

Part of the legislation around a restaurant licence is that a substantial meal must be served (currently valued at €9). Pubs needed to do that to be treated as a restaurant.

I assume those pubs who can't open up due to a lack of outdoor area (and even those who do) will be doing takeaway pints

It was a ridiculous unscientific load of rubbish, just like a lot of things NPHET-FFFG have brought in, at least now a year later they're admitting it....

The Outdoor drinking/dining will be a laugh, one thing I always remember in Dublin city was when you sat outside you'd be hassled for cash by the brass monkeys walking around like Zombies looking for change or a drink or a smoke etc... Or gangs of youths wandering around bored looking to cause hassle/fights with people who've had a good few drinks etc......

Haven't nearly all pubs outdoor areas now (smoking area)?

Enthused by today's reports but still think this is the problem with allowing outdoor.

It simply gives them an excuse to keep indoor closed for longer. We'll hear "hospitality has reopened" constantly for summer now when it won't be. All that'll be open is a tiny number of beer gardens which will be booked out constantly and a continuation of takeaway pints with a few chairs outside the front door. It's not the pub, or restaurants and it still screws the vast vast majority of pub/restaurant workers

How many pubs in this country have you been in?

Christ! Time to get out more...!

I believe the figure is something like 20% of licenced premises in Ireland have suitable outdoor drinking/dining areas....

Must be hundreds. Not in the last year.

Can you provide a link? In my experience most would have an outdoor smoking area at least.

I can think of maybe 7 pubs in Dublin that'll have a decent outdoor setup where they can accommodate 50 or so. I can think of 2 in Galway city and know of zero pubs in rural areas. Im sure there'll be the odd exception but the vast majority wont open

Would agree in that i couldn't see the majority of pubs opening while it was outdoor dining only.

Just heard it from the head of the Restaurants assoc. who was on "The Tonight show"

Apart from that, most city pubs the "smoking area" is standing on the footpath with people walking by or cars parked...
Not to mention that a lot of pubs will have to convert their carpark into an outdoor area, plus purchase new tables and chairs suitable for outdoors...

I can see a lot of places waiting for Indoor dining, as was the case last year it's very hard to make a pub financially viable with a dozen or so people sitting outside the front door..

Many would be out the back or side of the establishment so they presumably wouldn’t be able to open those up?

It does narrow the field considerably when the outside dining area must be accessible without entering the establishment.
