Hey all, is there any product I can use on a garden wall to prevent paint flaking and coming off? I presume dampness is causing it, coming up through the wall as there's nothing on the other side of the wall, earth etc. Have some pics

Cant advise but was just about to ask about a paint to paint over wall capping that is flaking, so maybe someone can answer both of our questions in one;)

If you coat with stabilizer or primer before painting, it should help a lot.

In both cases scrape it back to a sound surface as best you can, give it a rub of a wire brush, dust it off and give it a coat of stabilising primer

Power wash, whatever comes off comes off.
    Let dry
Use a stabilising solution as primer and then 2 full coats of chosen colour.
Otherwise use a product called owatrol eb primer, it’s used as a mix in additive to water based paints and will do the same job as a stabilising solution. Add into your 1st coat of exterior paint.

If it's dampness there is no real solution it will eventually come back.
As regard the caps scrape off all the loose paint. I always put a coat of diluted oil based white undercoat on sills and caps before painting them with masonry paint.

Power wash then prime with a product called alkali resistant primer, then 2 coats of your chosen paint colour, paint will never start to flake again. The reason it’s flaking is cause a primer was never used day one on the cappings.

Agree. Using a good primer pays dividends in the long run. I used to be a lazy painter and think the job was done when 2 coats of paint were applied. Looking around my home now it's obvious where a primer has been used.

Would it be best to paint the primer over the patches after power washing or over the the entire wall?

You only need to put the primer over the patches

Ultimately if the source of the dampness cannot be treated it will eventually return.
