Junior cert Engineering- what's it like?

    Hi


    My daughter has to pick her options for junior cert.



    Is engineering a tough course? What kind of student does it suit?


    Any other info appreciated. She is trying to make the choice and doesn't have much info.

    Did the school not give them taster courses? Very odd to make them choose blind.

    Most subjects at JC level are about developing skills. The skills learned in engineering - measurement, precision, problem solving, managing information, working alone or with others etc. are all transferable into other subjects whether she chooses to continue it on into LC or college.

    I would encourage her. If she decides it's not for her, it won't do her any harm and if she likes it, it opens up many options.

    The syllabus should be on curriculumonline.ie

    The subject will be new to the school next year, otherwise she would have had a taster. No one in our house studied engineering type subjects at 2nd level so we are at a bit of a loss on how to guide her. She is generally a very good student, decent enough at maths.



    Would you know what's involved in the engineering CBA's?

    The first CBA is based on an aspect of engineering of the students choosing....for example they could look at the use of a mechanism/material and explore its applications in daily life....the second is based on their project which is to be completed in yr3....no course has got to year 3 yet and the second year CBA’s have been canned due to lost class time!

    Engineering is basically rebranded metalwork,the 3 hr practical day exam is gone,there’s probably less of a focus on fabrication and an integration of control technologies such as the micro:bit
