Stuck Mod

Any tips for getting a mod off that will not budge an inch?

What type is it? I've an A-Tec on a .223 that can be tough to remove. Once i stripped it down to the first section, there is part of the baffle section I could slot something through for leverage and it loosened it no problem.

In general get them off after a range session asap.

Soaking overnight in WD40 is my go to when parts don’t lend themselves to a touch of acetylene.

+1 on a good soak in oil.

Also when you re-attach consider smearing a bit of copper grease on the threads before threading on the mod.

Works wonders with my mods and shotgun chokes between removals.

Being steeped in a bucket of diesel or kerosine works wonders, also a bit of heat can do the trick. Also thumping the mod where the threads are with a mallet or a hammer with a bit of wood can do it to, breaks the seal.

Have you been storing the rifle with the mod on? The crown is probably corroded

Fire up the chip deep fat fryer,or anything that you can submerge both the can and the threaded part of the barrel in veggie oil and dunk the mod and barrel in there for appx 20 mins[Minus tonite's. chips for dinner of course!] Repeat as necessary until the veggie oil loosens and penetrates the thread.

Make sure you drain the can and let it cool down first,a pool of very hot chip oil can be trapped in the can and give give 2nd to 3rd degree burns

LATER [to emphasize safety that should be common sense]

Also,dont go eating out of this chip fryer or pan,etc afterwards.As it might have stuff in it that is poisonous..

Thanks I'll give this a go.

And to answer how it got stuck on in the first place, I got it off a lad who doesn't shoot much anymore, at a great discount... only catch was there was a mod attached for who knows how long that he could not get off.

It’s probably rust welded on!

I'd be a tad leary of doing this with anything intended to be used to cook food ever again because of the heavy metal contamination from a thoroughly used mod.

Maybe I'm being a bit over cautious, but given that burned propellant contains heavy metals as well as the obvious lead having passed through the mod & barrel in the form of rounds I'd err on the side of caution and if you go for this method use a saucepan you are willing to discard or use for non food purposes afterwards

He can't do that, everytime he would fire the rifle he would get the smell of cooking chips and be off home with his tongue hanging out. I was using a pan of clean veggie oil to quench o1 tool steel when making things out of it, and it happened to me

Dont use FIRE CLEAN gun oil then. Swear that stuff is pure Soya oil.:eek:

Big thanks to every one for the recommendations in the end it was a mixture of wd40, hot oil and a visegrips that got it off. Needs some clean though!

If soaking in diesel dosen't work your best bet is to try some heat.

Carefully wrap the barrel with a soaking wet cloth to keep it protected/cool/cold and gently heat the mod with a blow torch.

If that dosen't work and the mod can be dissambeled, try and dismantle it, if successful you should now be left with the screw on part left on the rifle. It should be easier to remove by itself.

Just my tuppence worth.
