Toddler keeps wriggling out of car seat straps

Over the last month or so, 2.5 year old has regularly been wriggling out of his car seat straps. It doesn't matter how tight they are, he still manages to do it! It's grand when both of us are in the car, one of us can sit in the back with him - but when we're on our own it's hard to keep an eye on him.

We got one of these anti-escape yokes, but it's absolutely useless - doesn't make any difference. I don't want to go down the road of the chest-clip things because I think they're not approved from a safety perspective? Does anyone have any info on these?

We still have him rear-facing, but wondering if it'll make any difference if we turn him around?

You could try this, it is crash tested in Australia and is sometimes recommended on the rear facing
toddler Facebook page. Also you can get mirrors that attach to the headrest so you can see rear facing children, I have them in my car as have 2 rear facing in the back

Yeah, we have a mirror but it doesn't make any difference! He's brazen as anything, threats or bribes have no effect

That Houdini strap was the one that I was a bit wary of. Looks like it does the job, but it's not approved for use in many countries as you're essentially meant to be able to get the child out of the seat by using the main buckle alone. I suppose it comes down to weighing up the risks - if there are no other options, I might have to go with that one. Just wondering if anyone else has used it?

We live on the same street as a Garda station so officers walking the beat/driving past are part of the scenery for us. On the spur of the moment one day, I stopped an officer as we walked passed and we had a quick chat about the legality of wearing car seat belts properly. She was only 2.5 but it scared her straight ðŸ˜‚
