His qualifications and credentials are impeccable. Since March of last year he has been a voice of calm and reason.

And it just happened to be Professor Bhattacharya who said that the most important thing was not to sow panic or create fear. I was highlighting the message. It's irrelevant who said it. Is the message "the most important thing is not to sow panic and create fear" the right message? That's the question. Or is frightening people and causing people to be very distressed the right approach?

And I'm not talking about The Great Barrington Declaration. Just what he said about sowing panic and creating fear.

He's been pushing bull**** from the start of the pandemic.
Here he and a colleague back last March argue that the US death count would be in the range of 20,000 to 40,000 if 100 million were infected.
    https://med.stanford.edu/content/dam/sm/id/documents/COVID/Is%20the%20Coronavirus%20as%20Deadly%20as%20They%20Say_%20-%20WSJ.pdf

He then of course went on to push herd-immunity via infection for months. What a ****ing disaster that would have been. He's thankfully shut the **** up on this now that we have vaccines, but not before getting the ear of Trump and filling the giant baby's head full of nonsense. Nonsense that got people killed.

He's now got a new line of incorrect bull**** that he's pushing, having left the GBD behind without so much as an apology.

I don't care about his educational credentials. We've seen from the likes of himself, Gupta, Hennigan and Cummins that sometimes credentials don't mean a damn thing. These are some of the most poisonous **** alive in the world today.

    I hope he dies screaming

Huge number of people on the move today on the roads. We are playing into nphet and the government hands. Fourth wave is on the way.

    Great to see.

People need to stop listening to the nonsense that is being farted out by NPHET and the Government and take our country and civil liberties back.

The roads have been like that for weeks now.

The ending of lockdown is in sight now, thankfully.

That means a big adjustment for many people, many of whom are introverts and enjoyed the fact that they didn't HAVE to socialise etc. I include myself in that. Don't like big gatherings or pubs, but love seeing family, I miss that and look forward to seeing them all together soon.

There are those who are still chomping at the bit to do everything now. That cohort will never be satisfied with any restrictions for the common good, but they continue to snipe and moan. Their coughs are being softened a bit now that vaccines are on the way at last and a bit of patience is required for another little while.

Getting back to "normal" life will be a challenge for many who were comfortable enough in lockdown. For those who felt trapped, bored and financially strapped it was a long road, but here's to better times ahead, and it won't be too long now.

Imagine how we would feel if vaccines didn't work.

    Yeah it is great

Will we get to a stage where NPHET/Government efforts implode, members on the streets shouting 'people please hold firm, protect each other' etc

You're quite right, I should've mentioned India. I've read about statements made by scientists and doctors in India that are similar to the ones we hear every day from Western scientists and doctors. But the statements I read were more in the context of TB and air pollution.

Do you agree with Professor Jay Bhattacharya that doctors and scientists should not sow panic and create fear?

To be fair China is not much better.

Jay Bhattacharya? I believe he's also from India but now lives in the US.

Where did he say that btw?

I do know that he and the two other researchers put forward a proposal to overturn current coronavirus strategies to allow covid to run riot
With the aim of achieving “herd immunity”. They conceded that it would be hard to protect older people in the community, but suggested individuals could shield themselves and that efforts to keep infections low "merely dragged matters out".

The World Health Organization and numerous academic and public-health bodies stated that the proposed strategy was dangerous, unethical, and lacked a sound scientific basis.

The WHO would also strongly disagree with our countries handling of the virus and the nonchalant way in which we implement perpetual and devastating lockdowns.

You can have look at the 14 day reports from December to latest one, and the highest figure in any one report is 12% approx.

    ...

OK. Which 14 day report gives the 12% healthcare acquired patient and healthcare acquired staff figure?

Not being smart but I can't seem to locate it tbh

I find it hard to take posts with pontifical undertones seriously

A wanting to return to normality is not something that should be considered evil or uncivilised.

If the vaccines didn’t work we would need to follow the rest of Europe and live with the virus while using lockdowns sparingly to lower case numbers when required

So I’m not sure what point your trying to make about the vaccine not working, but if that did happen, you would need to readjust your own approach or stay indoors

He said that he was taught as a medical school student that doctors and scientists are not supposed to sow panic or create fear.

I don't know about that tbh. I can't find that anywhere.

But might be better to look at what he says in context
the neglect of the good COVID news breeds panic and fear, which is never a good public health strategy. The public should know that the pandemic will not be here forever. While these are challenging times - and, for many families, life-changing times - like every other pandemic in human history, the COVID-19 pandemic will end. With wise and informed policy choices, we can reduce its ultimate toll of death and human misery.

There's plenty of good news with regard to Covid tbh. Especially with regard to the early development of not one but several vaccines. And I think most people know with that the end is within sight.

Unfortunately he doesn't seem to have lived up to his own words about "wise and informed policy choices" considering his previous no vaccine / no control covid policy.

I don't watch them. I'm going by what is reported in the media. It seems to be always negative. But it's good that there are positive messages presented during the press conferences. I'll watch one in full. It was rather foolish in hindsight to be relying on the media to highlight positives.

It’s best not to form an opinion on something before getting the facts. If everyone could do that the world would be a much better place.

In Bushey Park at the moment, young and old, families, those playing sport all out and about, most sitting around having a picnic or drinking. It's never been more obvious to me that the harshest version of these restrictions have been rejected by the majority.

If vaccines didnt work on this virus we'd just have to accept reduced life expectancy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,996 ✭✭✭✭gozunda

Doesn't really matter. They can't afford to keep the place shut down or 500k on PUP much longer.

Speeding up the vaccines is their only option now. People simply won't adhere to prolonged restrictions moving forward.

I think in all liklyhood we'll possible manage OK at least until we get people vaccinated with one dose. Anything else is just plain stupid. And the absolute majority of people know that. We can't speed up what we don't have. Yes we could try fighting the big boys for some of their stash but I can't see that working tbh.

Same here, from what I can see. Just looks like a normal public holiday. People everywhere. This would be another (albeit controversial) reason to get most back to work. If more and more are just ignoring any restrictions and willing to take their chances, we might as well get the economy back moving as well.

Doesn't make much sense to keep them on the PUP when they're living their social lives as normal, regardless.

But if the median age of Covid deaths is the same as that for all deaths (83), would we really?

yea i think its the beginning of the end now...in the city centre today starting to see green shoots again...lots more cafes, restaurants and few pubs doing takeaway..i think and hope we will never accept a level 5 lockdown again as vaccanations ramp up over the summer...the only checkpoint i seen today around the city centre was outside the department of health...prob so nphet can look out the window and feel relevant now nobody is listening

That's been the case for weeks. It's unrealistic and unpractical to expect people to sit indoors with good weather. The Government have failed to address reality and instead have painted a fantasy for themselves.
The govt dont have any fantasy. It has been explained that the new variant spreads so much quicker. If you see whats happening in Europe you will see as soon as they open up a massive surge.

Now whilst numbers go up nothing will open and schools wont go back. So people can move around as they want. Up to them but they wont be shopping, going for meals and kids wont be educated. Really the govt will always get their wages, up to the people if they want to sunbathe!!!!!!

European countries were relatively open until this week Betty, they use lockdown as a temporary measure to reduce case numbers .

Belgium I think I read have gone into a “strict lockdown”

People can still move freely across the country and restaurants are still open though

Hospitalisations and ICU numbers are constantly going down, because the vaccines are working.

NPHET will use whatever statistic happens to suit their agenda of negativity to recommend level 5. We know this because they spent last summer bleating on about the R number when we know how irrelevant it is as you get to single digit case numbers.

I don't know how it hasn't dawned on you yet that nothing that the public do during this time will have any impact on NPHET recommendations. As I said yesterday, Level 5 at 6000 cases and 400 cases. Level 5 at over 1000 hospitalised and level 5 at under 300 hospitalised. Under lockdown for close to 8 months now, with level 5 making up the majority of that, with 3 weeks off.

The tutting at people out sunbathing is particularly hilarious, and illustrates a massive lack of knowledge on your part in how the virus is massively less transmissable outdoors. Your posts are unfortunately a prime example of what watching the likes of George Lee and McConkey pontificate for a year can do to a person.

On top of that anyone who thinks we will just ignore restrictions, do you think when numbers are huge teachers will be forced into an unsafe environment? No they wont, Schools will close. Any shop, pub that opens up some one will report them and they will be arrested. Just stay home, wait a few more months until vaccines are given. If people dont. The vaccine wont work as well due to new variants hospitals will be overwhelmed and we will be in this mess forever.

Ive never listened to either of the people you have mentioned. It dosent really matter what they say. When the numbers surge we go into stricter lockdown. Try telling the teachers union that at 2000 cases a day they have to teach. Its not happening. That is what will happen if people dont hold out a bit longer.

    Schools will close.

    They won't.
Any shop, pub that opens up some one will report them and they will be arrested.

Probably, but if enough of them opened then the government wouldn't be able to do a thing.
Just stay home, wait a few more months until vaccines are given.

Where have I heard this 'wait a few more days/weeks/months nonsense before? Just hold firm, we have only been locked down for almost a year. Whatever happened to flattening the curve?
If people dont. The vaccine wont work as well due to new variants

The vaccines are completely effective against all known variants. You have been watching too much Micheal Martin.
hospitals will be overwhelmed and we will be in this mess forever.

Hospitals are 'overwhelmed' every single year. Articles linked from 2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016 which all speak about hospitals being overwhelmed. Strangely enough, we didn't shut down the whole country on these occasions.

The Irish media and government have seriously damaged the thought process and risk analysis of many people.

A significant number of people likely won’t have the self confidence to return to normal after this
