Interesting stipulation for children over 16 who want to get tested at one of the walk in pop up testing centres.

They can get tested if no symptoms and have not tested positive for Covid-19 in the last six months.

Is this an indication that the swabs could be picking up old infections maybe or is it due to the immunity factor?

Why only for children 16+, does their immunity or viral fragments last longer than adults. Don't see a similar stipulation for adult walk ins.

So you keep saying. Fact is lots of opinions out there. And its not just the "west"

Quick search produced these from China. Do they fit the general conspiracy theory or?

From the official state-run press agency of the People's Republic of China referring to India and scientific opinion on mask wearing there

And on a related note - I love this one from The Chinese Global Times (a daily tabloid newspaper under the remit of the Chinese government) especially considering that the Chinese government refused to admit that there was any danger of P2P transmission at the start of the pandemic.

You're quite right, I should've mentioned India. I've read about statements made by scientists and doctors in India that are similar to the ones we hear every day from Western scientists and doctors. But the statements I read were more in the context of TB and air pollution.

Do you agree with Professor Jay Bhattacharya that doctors and scientists should not sow panic and create fear?

The whole thread is insane. I started out laughing, but I genuinely felt sorry for some of them in the end. Places like Reddit only validate this kind of behavior, instead of encouraging them to move away from it, because it's clearly terrible for their mental health.

A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

The same could be said for this thread. Posting in here is likely doing more harm than good to some people. It hasn't made one bit of difference to the decisions the government and NPHET made either.

To be fair, so is boards.

Reddit is on another level in my opinion. The majority of the posters would gladly admit to having many mental illnesses. It's like the place is made up of teenagers with serve social anxiety.

Exactly all fear driven, the latest buzz word is grim, that word has such negative connotations and there never seems to be any bit of positivity at all. Surely that can’t be best practice in these scientific/ medical fields.Seems it’s similar in U.K. then somewhere like Australia seems to be like the land of hope right now.

Yes, 'grim' and 'doom' and so on. Here's the latest one in the US: https://www.thelundreport.org/content/darkest-days-pandemic-lie-ahead-expert-warns-oregon-lawmakers

"“The darkest days are just coming upon us,” said Osterholm, who said he has reversed his prior stance that schools should reopen this spring. A similar tone was also struck on Monday by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during a White House briefing, according to press reports. She warned of "impending doom.""

Is it any wonder really that so many people are terrified when you have statements like that in the media every day?

I occasionally read the Daily Mail. I don't like it, but it's just easy to scroll through because of the layout of the site. I've noticed what they do when there's good news and what they do when the latest Western scientist decides to create panic. This is an example of a bad news headline:

"Expert predicts NEW virus will emerge and that lockdowns will last for YEARS"

They always capitalise words when it's a scary prediction.

And when it's good news here's how it's presented:

"Expert says masks will soon be a thing of the past"

No capital letters. Just a plain old headline.

This place IMO is fairly decent and balanced, the mods are doing a stand up job of keeping bickering down. Its also open and free to express dissent - which is rare these days.

This threads most ardent 'covidians' come across with good arguments and mostly seem above average IQ, sane, and up for engaging posters - I may not agree with RainD and Bonkers but i'm glad they are posting here, dare I say, i've learned a thing or two along the way.

    TLDR: Boards > Reddit

You definitely have a point, but this place is probably somewhere between Reddit and normal society.

There's definitely more normal people who can understand basic logic and reasoning than there are irrational ones who are unable to.

There are a few outliers of course who seem like they're being paid a salary to vehemently defend the Government and everything even tangentially related.

It’s very concerning, particularly the South African variant

So much so the South Africans didn’t actually shut the pubs

I was berated on here a while back when I stated that South Africa had, not only closed pubs but banned all sales of alcohol and cigarettes for over 200 days. It seems to have worked up to a point. They've been able to reopen.

Reddit is full of NEETs with social issues, who loved the lockdown, as it forced the world to be like them, so this should be of no surprise to anyone.

You still have people on here saying no one loves lockdown.

Besides the weirdos you have people who weren't earning much money beforehand and living at home loving it. I met someone the other day saying he's enjoying it and drinking with his friends all the time.

Big spenders from the United States and the EU are welcome without hotel quarantine.

Andorra and Monaco visitors, surrounded by EU countries, must quarantine in a hotel.

Money has trumped public health concerns.

If there is a spike caused by this, the buck stops with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Yeah the language they use is appallingly and complete hyperbole very irresponsible and that’s not even touching on some of the cringe worthy journalism of the last twelve months. But guess there is money in click bait also another side to it of course.

Bad news sells, unfortunately. Irresponsible is the right word. It's so irresponsible what they're doing. No attempt ever made to balance the negative with the positive. I don't think I've heard heard a single positive statement from anyone from NPHET since March of last year. But that speaks to a problem that is unique to Ireland in the West, i.e. the lack of a functioning Fourth Estate in the country. If there was a proper media in Ireland then statements such as 'x weeks are crucial', 'very concerned' etc would be challenged, or at least questioned. For example, "why are you concerned even though x?, for example.

I have to ask if you actually watch any of the NOHET press conferences in full? Because if you did you did you would see them being positive and answering journalists questions just like the one you posted. This thread is so odd. Whenever I read it I get the feeling that the people posting here are living in some alternate reality. You clearly don’t want the press conferences yet somehow you think you know what goes on in them?

Jesus, he's the worst. Just the ****ing worst.

His qualifications and credentials are impeccable. Since March of last year he has been a voice of calm and reason.

And it just happened to be Professor Bhattacharya who said that the most important thing was not to sow panic or create fear. I was highlighting the message. It's irrelevant who said it. Is the message "the most important thing is not to sow panic and create fear" the right message? That's the question. Or is frightening people and causing people to be very distressed the right approach?

And I'm not talking about The Great Barrington Declaration. Just what he said about sowing panic and creating fear.

I don't watch them. I'm going by what is reported in the media. It seems to be always negative. But it's good that there are positive messages presented during the press conferences. I'll watch one in full. It was rather foolish in hindsight to be relying on the media to highlight positives.

I'd love to know what the rationale for that decision was. It seems that even if the vaccine was 200% effective there'd still be some cause for concern.

While part of lockdown is obviously to reduce cases and thus hospitalizations and deaths and in that respect this lockdown has been quite successful, another part of a successful lockdown is actually being able to exit it or at last significantly reduce it in a timely fashion. In that respect, this lockdown has been a dismal failure.
Only for vaccinations coming down the tracks, I'm not sure what would happen us.

Yeah a good analogy is taking medication with terrible side effects to get rid of a worse ailment. The side effects are worth it until the ailment is more tolerable than the side effects, after which point the benefit of taking the medication has diminished to a point whereby any rational person will stop taking it.

What we've done is essentially kept taking the medication anyway in case the ailment returns, rather than scaling down our intake of the medication in line with the cessation of said ailment.

I get that the Government are too scared to move any quicker than they have done but that isn't what strong, powerful leadership is. They've disowned the commerce and economic side of the equation in favor of doing everything necessary to keep Covid levels down.

The problem is, the cost of lockdown at this point is now outweighing the benefit, I think the Government know this but don't really care as the easy option is to defer responsibility to NPHET. Why would anyone make their jobs harder than they need to be.

That's been the case for weeks. It's unrealistic and unpractical to expect people to sit indoors with good weather. The Government have failed to address reality and instead have painted a fantasy for themselves.
