Its basic logic but I'll spell it out.

An outright bans means Irish citizens categorically could not enter Germany.

On the other hand, suppose instead Germany had imposed mandatory hotel quarantine on Irish citizens. Then, they have the option to either not enter Germany or else enter it and undergo mandatory hotel quarantine.

Arguably the German ban would been deemed proportionate.

It had a fixed end date
It didn’t effect German citizens or eu citizens resident in Germany
It was justified by way of the high case numbers of the U.K. variant

if you been in a red list country with 14 days previously you have to quarantine.
when did you got o Brazil?

I have been out here since early Jan. Booked to come back later this month. It could all change by then, looking at the **** show it is now lol! Good auld Ireland and the half-arsed measures again! God forbid they pissed off America and their out of control covid.

the german bans also exempted people travelling on business or cross border workers. People transiting through the country were also exempt, and unlike irish hotel quarantine where you have the army in their jeeps and machine guns at your front door in Dublin, that relies on trust of the person transiting, so could be seen as a far less harsh measure than whats proposed in Ireland.

The germans have a saying, for every rule (law) comes their exceptions, and being a country that loves to make things complicated, they lash on the exceptions with gusto !

The plans for the hotel quarantine in Ireland though didnt even allow an exemption for attending your parents funeral, and you coming from a country which might have no variant of concern and less covid than Ireland. The severity of the proposed measures are completely out of proportion to the risk.

I don't want there to be quarantine hotels to begin with. Bringing them in last year would have been a good move. Doing it now is nonsense.
The Government pandered to the mob with deciding on this quarantine plan, and now they are dealing with ever-increasing levels of nonsense.

We're not going to quarantine people flying in from Germany or the US. People need to get a grip.

I have a lot of sympathy for a government being forced to make difficult decisions while the opposition keep throwing out easy solutions, but I've no sympathy where they have done something they knew was not a good idea and now are being forced to keep digging. Hand this over to some multi-disciplinary public sector committee and ask them to provide a report in 6 months time by which time the pandemic will be a memory.

The government have backed away from introducing quarantine to the said countries after the legal advice. This includes the U.S. - The Irish Times.

Firstly, why is Austria currently on the list as they are in the EU.

And secondly, why can't the quarantine be introduced for the US?

Charlie Flanagan calls on the forced hotel quarantine to be scrapped - Indo.

Those going into that quarantine may be there illegally and could be entitled to compensation.

The more it’s reported the more of a shambles it’s highlighting. The government is not aligned or communicating.

Austria is on the list as they had (past tense) an issue with the south african variant , and its still on the list as the health experts are inept and cant keep up with the news.

The USA isnt a source of variants so its questionable whether it deserves to be on the list seeing as thats a prime reason to be put on the list.

Just regarding the US there are 2 variants that are potentially problematic; the New York strain and California strain.

I understand the government felt they were in a difficult position as the mob, whipped up by journalists (including for some reason RTE who we have to pay for) decided that instead of pointing the finger at ourselves we could blame people from abroad for the Winter surge. They postponed this for as long as they could.

The mob has moved on. Just drop it as quickly and as quietly as we can. Vaccination cert or recent negative test, welcome to Ireland.

Yep, they only brought in the negative test requirement in Mid January.

If they had brought it in around Autumn 2020 like most countries had already done then much of this would have been avoided.

Rightly so. Where did we get 90% of UK variant from otherwise?

Why didn't Ireland insist on a negative PCR?
These people hardly travelled knowing they were carrying anything.

Obviously every variant has come into this country from somewhere. But it can only spread if we allow it to spread internally. It wasn't someone travelling from abroad who caused every infection with the "UK variant", it was picked up by others and spread here as a consequence.

Now why are we blocking people from Israel, a country with much more people vaccinated, no unusual variants and a rapidly diminishing case count from entering this country without quarantining?

No need for airport controls as that would prevent the intrepid CEO of the Beacon from speeding around some UK race track. Meanwhile, hold tight all you little people in your tiny houses/flats until you are told it is safe to come out. The polls indicate that the silently majority want to "go harder"; remember we are all in this together.

    the Principality of Andorra
    Aruba
    the Kingdom of Bahrain
    Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba
the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
    the State of Israel
    the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan
    the Republic of Kosovo
    the State of Kuwait
    the Republic of Lebanon
    the Republic of San Marino
    the Republic of Moldova
    the Principality of Monaco
    Montenegro
    the Federal Republic of Nigeria
    the Republic of North Macedonia
    the Sultanate of Oman
    the State of Palestine
    the Republic of the Philippines
    the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico
    the State of Qatar

Spain has a travel ban on U.K travellers since December. Not quarantine, a ban.

What’s the biggest strain in Spain?

    The U.K. variant.

While I read that there's a New York variant now and there's no quarantine for them.

Qatar, that'll catch all those people coming from Australia that changed their flights to avoid the UAE.

No worries, they've a whole four days notice; sure that's piles of time to come up with a few grand, cancel any funerals, etc. I'm sure there'll be a queue of posters waiting to say how unsympathetic they are and how many weeks in advance you should have known.

Meanwhile, have they figured out how many people flying in from Lisbon aren't actually travelling from Lisbon? Have they bothered implementing social distancing and PPE on the bus to the hotel yet? Can you still just walk out of the hotel or is that someone else's problem? - sure technology is so advanced that of course the Gardai can track people down with just a name.

No doubt the variants came in by air the same everywhere. Defenders will argue.. In this order.

    1) No need to stop air travel procedures etc will catch it before it spreads
    2) When it arrives Ireland is at fault for allowing it to spread unhindered.
    3) Too late now we may as well continue..

Repeat for each newly imported variant.

    How about,

4.) Variants will exist for the rest of human existence since this disease will become endemic, so disrupting all connection with the rest of the world is a pointless and costly endeavour.

    Israel has 5 cases per 100k compared to Ireland's 11, France's 57, Poland's 75.

According to Coveney, "Hotel quarantine should not apply to countries where many Irish live". I'll just leave that there....

It's a joke, at one level they take NPHET's advice as gospel, here they are doing a complete favouritism to places their mates/families live in. Hard to take any decision serious now. There should be a rate per 100k and no matter what that country gets quarantined if it hits it.

Does ireland think they can borrow 28 billion and kill the economy and still pay out the PUP?

Even with vaccines life needs to go on, and there will be outbreaks of covid

So for everyone think its great to lock out countries go back to the middle ages with your thinking ,,
