Micil Distillery have announced that they’re distilling & laying down Galway’s first Irish whiskey in over a century.
While their own whiskey matures, they’re releasing two sourced Irish whiskeys in the summer. Interesting quote on their production process. Full article at link below.

‘‘Our production capacity is perhaps the smallest of any whiskey distillery in Ireland. With our small single copper pot still, we can only produce a maximum of 1 standard 200 litre cask per week, compared with the approximately 30 casks per week produced by some of the better known ‘small’ Irish distilleries and the thousands of casks a week produced by the likes of Jameson and Bushmills. Our production methods are painstakingly slow, and we do everything by hand with no automation. Our focus is purely on distilling spirits of exceptional flavour and quality, not on yields or profit margins.”

“Our first runs have been peated single malts, using 100% Irish barley, malted using Connemara turf from our family farm in Inverin. But as we ramp up production we plan to continue to innovate, bringing the creativity and resourcefulness of the Connemara poitín distiller to the whiskey category. Our whiskeys will draw heavily on our 170 years of distilling knowledge, our historic mash bills (recipes), and our Connemara terroir & provenance.”

Am I right in thinking that they're the only distillery using using Irish peat? Sounds interesting (and will probably be expensive).

Hi, has anyone tried Starward Nova whiskey yet from Australia? It’s available in Flaviars quarterly bottles - just wondering if it’s worth a go!

Someone on here had it alright and weren't exactly effusive in their praise. Can't recall who.

That’s interesting that they are using irish turf to malt the barley. They must be doing it themselves. Likely to be pricey though with that low volumes and manual effort but as an exiled Galwegian, and a fan of peat, I’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

Bit of drama around this. Another Killarney Distillery giving the launch a bit of grief. Some choice tweets below.

WARNING: THIS IS CUTE KERRY HOORISM! This whisky was not made in Killarney. It is an attempted hijacking of the valuable brand that is #LoveKillarney and all that it represents. We are the first distillery in Killarney and our whisky is ready in 2023. Get behind us ye hoors! https://t.co/UanDYcctoU

#Kerry and #Killarney all over it but where did it truthfully come from? Not Killarney or anywhere else in Kerry. Guessing made in West Cork. Can any of the many shareholders confirm? https://t.co/kgKPa94t5m

Keep it real is right. Great #Killarney bread. Made here in Killarney. Not cynically bought in from some other random mystery bakery and with a faux Killarney label slapped on..... have a nice #breakfast! #killarneymeanskillarney
    #lovekillarney
    #keepingitreal #provenance https://t.co/y99dzPAqpk
Well now I just want to avoid anything to do with Killarney. (More than I did before)

Yeah most Irish peated whiskey uses this barley I think.

Teeling were trying to get peated irish malt but they didn't have the volume for it to be viable.

Speaking of peat I was reading about Blackwater distilling whiskey last year at 300ppm which is octomore levels. Would be great to try a heavily peated irish whiskey. Any word on how that went or how it is maturing the beer revolu?

It will be some price I would imagine. Killowen distillery has a capacity of 10920 LPA which would be something similar to their 200ltrs a week.

I would like to try that too!!

Finished my Ardbeg last night, so can kind of sort of justify a replacement
O Briens sold out of Aberlour Abunadh

I bought a bottle from Flaviar last year. Totally underwhelmed. Very bland. It’s still sitting in the cabinet. I’ll probably use if for cocktails.

Anyone know anything about Connacht Distillery? New single malt release at €150. I'd be pushing my luck at that price considering I ordered RB 10 the other day!

Good video below with David Stapleton from Connacht Distillery. Around 800 bottles went on sale in December and it is still available so it might not be one for investment just yet.

I ordered 2 bottles, 1 to drink and 1 to keep, hopefully its good and the price will go up. I have a bottle of their Brothership bourbon/Irish blend which isnt bad. From Mayo originally so would like to support them.

I was at a virtual tasting Friday night, never a fan on peated Scotch but was introduced to Ardbeg 10. Highly recommended, hard to get and its about 60 Euro a bottle but bought it and never thought I'd buy a peated Scotch.

Celtic Whiskey have more 2019 in stock. 1 bottle limit per customer. €250 a bottle.

If you're going to drink Ardbeg, drink Ardbeg, it completely annihilates your palate so you can't drink anything else. I love the uigeadail.

Theyre 750ml too. Great if youre drinking but not if youre collecting.

But this whiskey is not their product. They're just putting it in bottles.

While they didn't distil it, they have finished it, haven't they?
And in barrels that they have aged with their own stout.

Here's a video from a small distillery in Texas, that smoke their own barley.
They are actually using Irish peat in this video. And when I looked up how much the peat cost on Amazon I was shocked.
