I am trying to connect and share files from my PC to Xperia L4 using Samba. I got

https://f-droid.org/en/package/com.google.android.sambadocumentsprovider/ but cannot find the share path

    I think is something like smb://workgroup/computer name/users/username/shared folder/file
Should they be they / or \ or a mixture. Or shoud workgroup be the network. my tablet can do this but has abrowse facility
I also tried ghost commander with a plug in samba which cannot connect but give the smb://workgroup but nothing further.

Put solid explorer (or other file manager) on your phone and it should be able to connect to Windows with user&password.

Some file-managers are easier than others to setup.

    Your link is a 404?

^^^ Updated my post and shared a link on how to setup for solid.

Other file-managers probably can achieve the same, just google for instructions.

Your app is very basic and probably hard to setup.
This app extends the built in File Manager to support connecting to SMB file shares. You can download and upload your files from your device once the connection has been set up. The app doesn't support browsing your local network for shares yet, so you will have to type the full URI (e.g. smb://server/data).

    Warning

Also your particular app (com.google.android.sambadocumentsprovider) was removed from Playstore due to infecting windows with WannaCrypt and NotPetya.

You could have mentioned that in OP.

    You could try

    https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.zhanghai.android.files

Haven't used it so don't how easy/hard connecting to Samba is with it?

    Got it from this list
    https://www.slant.co/topics/9397/~open-source-and-ad-free-file-managers-with-root-explorer-for-android

    1. HamBurger menu top left
    2. + Add Storage
    3. SMB Server

And once you have setup windows correctly you should see your PC listed?

    You can leave domain blank

Check solid instructions for setting up file sharing on PC.

Have you latest version of app? v1.2.0 (22)

    https://github.com/zhanghai/MaterialFiles/releases/tag/v1.2.0

F-Droid is only giving 1.1.4 download from github or play for latest.

Windows security probably won't allow you on without password.

As I said see the 'Solid' guide for windows settings.

    Glad you got it working.

If you have no password to login into PC, then you don't need it for the app?
