NI car with English v5 VAT & VRT?

    Hi all,

    I’ve seen a used car in Northern Ireland I want to purchase from a dealership (2017, 45000km on clock).
    Called VRT centre who advise if I have receipt that I bought it in NI and an NI address on the logbook then it’s just VRT I pay.
    Called the dealer who said the logbook has an English address & arrived to them in NI mid Jan 2021.

    I’m guessing this means that I would have to pay VAT (but not customs) if it’s not an NI address on the logbook? Which means I probably won’t buy it.

    What I don’t get is, if someone in NI bought the car now and then sold it to me months, as far as I’m aware I would only be liable for VRT...or would I be expected to know if it had English heritage that was still in place after brexit??

    I've been curious about this as well. Is it the log book that's important or the receipt?

    Lots of NI dealers buy from GB for obvious reasons. It's actually better to deal with a GB car as you can normally see full MOT history etc online (DVLANI in Coleraine is manual and Mots up there are a bit like down here, gov run).
    Im guessing technically the dealer should transfer from DVLA GB to NI, but probably leave that up to the consumer as it's a pain and it adds another owner to the record (but again would like to know how true and what the correct practice is).

    When I called the VRT booking line on Friday they said both need to have an NI address. My understanding is that they should have paid custom on the vehicle coming in and give me proof of this, then I’ll have to pay VAT (which I think will be zero given it’s not a new car and has mileage). They claim that they tried to obtain what they owe as the importers, but that when their account processes it, they don’t seem to come up with any tariff. It’s incredibly confusing. But yeah, you’re right, they don’t transfer the logbook until it’s sold as it adds another driver technically.

    But presently I can’t see any difficult in getting my dad to buy it (who lives in NI), register it and then sell it to me. Means the logbook will have an NI address...

    (I wonder if we will end up seeing more yellow plates registered to NI relatives to save such hassle..)
