Mini discs :D yep. For some reason this thread reminded me of the old radio/tape recorder I had as a teenager (must be TBL's playlist!). I remember pressing record when a song came on and hoping the DJ wouldn't talk over it or cut it short, so many mixed tapes made on that trusty recorder!

What about a top 5 for each of us instead of just one song??!!!

I remember doing this too, gosh yes, and taping films as well and praying the video tape wouldn't run out 10 mins before the end of the movie :pac:

My own addition to the Playlist will be Apply Some Pressure by Maximo Park.
My favourite band who I've seen more times than I can remember. They almost broke through to a bigger audience with this song in the mid noughties but it wasn't to be. They're still on the go though and still releasing quality stuff. This song cannot fail to up the pace when on the road :)

Last time I looked at this thread it was on Page 2 :pac:

I don't really listen to music while running, but here's a few that I like to help get the blood pumping that I don't think have been mentioned here....

QOTSA - Go With The Flow
    Alan Parsons Project - Sirius
    Prodigy - Full Throttle
Tin Tin Out - Strings for Yasmin
    Eminem - Till I Collapse

As I type I'm listening to 2manyDJs - This Is Belgium (Part 1) ...loads of others I could list here mind :D

Not only was it a stunning concert and an amazing performance but it's a reminder of the weekly Friday pilgrimage made to the Ambassador Cinema to see it. :)

    Alan Parsons Project - Sirius

They play that tune on the start line of Berlin as they're counting down. Always gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Hopefully I'll be hearing it over there again.

Here's a playlist I threw together for a pre-Kildare match BBQ I had a couple of summers back. Sun was shining, beers were flying, Championship was kicking into gear (for the better teams anyway, we got beaten by Tyrone that evening now that I think back  ).....hopefully it's not too long before those evenings are back.

    cheating here a little but..

    1 song for;

Racing - "Don't go back to Dalston" by The Editors, specifically the chorus as I am rarely in the lead..

Running - "I feel love" by Donna Summer [studio version] as it's just a magnificent tune as you are jogging free above the city on Ticknock.

I rarely use earphones so have to sing to myself :)

Some good tunes on that list that take me back to many a night in the various clubs I frequented & my trips to Scotland - Gigi D'Agostino La Passion being top of that list:D

Ok if I am limited to one song... I'll have to pick Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You. Probably most consistent choice across all my playlists. And she's just cool.

When outside usually don’t listen to anything apart from my own thoughts, which can get pretty weird on a long run.. amazing of the things you can think about when on your own and in the zone on a long run..
I do wear headphones when on treadmill or turbo trainer though and it would be a mix of everything from old classics to modern pop. I’m not a music snob so will listen to anything.

Well this thread exploded!! Saw some tunes there that brought back some memories!!Better than the other thread in any case :(

I'm constantly listening to music when not in a meeting that is. Being a real dance head I've a few long play mixes below for anyone who is into deep or progressive house. These are great for those long easy runs as they tend to just trip away for a couple of hours.

Lee Burridge – Deep progressive House
    https://soundcloud.com/robot-heart/lee-burridge-robot-heart-10-year-anniversary-burning-man-2017

    DSF – Melodic Deep House

    Guy J – Melodic Techno

    Nu-Disco
    https://soundcloud.com/somethingspaecial/something-spaecial-vol90-by-voju

For something chunkier try one of the last live sessions by a master Andrew Weatherall
    https://soundcloud.com/dkmntl/andrew-weatherall-at-dekmantel-festival-2019

    For something a bit different
FleetMac Wood (Because unbelievably Fleetwood Mac can be made better)

Here is a great playlist by Kelly-Anne Byrne of tunes from "The beat goes on". There is a weekend of listening in it.

Having studiously ignored the request for a single song i'll finish with

    Great thread.

Don't listen to music when running, only warming up for a race or before a session.

    A variety of songs.

I remember stepping out of my hotel in frankfurt before the marathon and Rather Be by clean bandit came on.

Others that have to be played:
    Roar by Katie Perry.
    The 212,
    Sandstorm by darude.
    A few Sia songs
    A few Luke Kelly songs
Fiesta by the pouges, went on for seville and has stayed on it.
    The urban cookie collective
How sweet it is by James Taylor (our wedding song). That's usually last to be played.

Most recent addition Ecuador by Sash with an shot of espresso and out the DOOR for a session. VOOM

For recovery runs, I listen to podcast depending on what day I run affects the selection of pod.
Currently: wind of change - did the CIA Write the song. Can't help singing along to it when it's played.
    Real Dictators
The Totally Football show and spin offs.
    The High Performance Podcast
    David mc Williams
    The Real Science of Sport

    So, One song only...

For the specifics of a running playlist I have an answer for that. I have about 400 songs or so on my phone which I occasionally listen to when running. And out of the whole lot one "locks me in" every time and I find my cadence matching the song very obviously and precisely, to the extent that if I try to "unlock" my running feels like it is misfiring. Maybe it just happens to exactly match my LSR cadence, but it has "locked" up to my running when running uphill, downhill, flat, smooth and highly technical. Not a song that would even make a longlist for my favorite song or band, but for the running playlist Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis it is!

Another good subject for running music would be best and worst earworm experiences!

  • Registered Users Posts: 585 ✭✭✭FinnC

No Limit from 2 Unlimited is one song that gets me going when on a hard interval on the treadmill.
Cheesy it may be but something about it just gets me moving!
And of course the real obvious one is Bill Conti and Gotta Fly Now from Rocky, excellent when your struggling towards the end of a set or a Tempo run.
I’d love to run up those steps in Philly someday!

Before you read this I am aware how much of a nerd this list makes me but....:)

Having read that the ideal running cadence is 180 strides per minute I put the following 180 bpm playlist together. Not all spot on but near 180 or 90 bpm was all that is required to get in:

    https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5g3tnfxxWBvUVRNo6fn2L3?si=bR8AM6BBRGuEQbBrSbZqOg

Result is that you get a mix of different types of music, some you look forward to - some you cannot wait to finish - but I found it takes my mind off the running and attempts to keep me at 180 strides!!

    Gangsta's Paradise - Coolio
Running down a dream - Tom Petty
Message in a bottle - the Police
Bright side of the Road - Van Morrison
Jack and Diane - So Far So Good
In da Club - 50 Cent
    Lose Yourself - Eminem
Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
The Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy
The Sign - Ace of Bass
The Boys of Summer - Don Henley
Truly Madly Deeply - Savage Garden
Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benatar
    I'm a believer - The Monkees
Get ur Freak On - Missy elliot
The Times they are a CHanging - Bob Dylan
B Boys Makin with the freak freak - Beastie Boys
    Going UNderground - The Jam
Stretch out and wait - The Smiths
    Broken Face - Pixies
    Ironic - Alanis Morissette
Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
    Umbrella - Rihanna
One Call Away - Charlie Puth
    Gold Digger - Kanye
    Yellow - Coldplay

    and more......
