I'll preface this by saying 1) that I have too many mostly-full bottles in my collection already and 2) that I've posted the same question about most of them in this forum before buying, but anyway!

I've had my eye on Writers Tears Double Oak for a few weeks. I saw one shop selling it for €55 with free delivery but I bought the Drumshanbo that week instead. O'Brien's dropped it to €50 last week but I bought the Ratheadon 1.2.

Would people here say I should pick it up while it's still going for €50?

Lads I forgot completely about the RB 10 launch, is it sold out? Can't find anything on their site to buy it.

Does anyone have experience with Sailor's Home? I see that a lot of bottles are on sale from master of malt.

Havent had it. I see it features in an upcoming beer and whiskey tasting with L Mulligans. Click collect only alas.

The Double Oak is a lovely whiskey. Id get it over anything from Waterford.

    Powers Johns Lane deconstruction tonight.

The colour off that sherry cask is immense - you can see why caramel is used so often to try get to that colour when the wood doesn't provide it.

I'm going to wait for the recording. When a tasting finishes at 9 I have a tendency to continue from my own stock!

Back to an old reliable tonight. Haven't touched a drop of this since long before Christmas.

Still as sweet and smooth as I recall. Will always have it on the shelf.

I'd echo these sentiments. Its the nicest of their range outside of the Mizunara Cask Strength IMO. I haven't had the Waterford yet but in terms of value if nothing else the Double Oak is a winner. I almost always have a bottle of it on the go, worth the extra few quid compared to the copper pot IMO.

The whiskey lives up to its colour. Bit of a cliche but if they bottled this it would be a bestseller.

I'm waiting for them to either replace or collect and refund mine. Sent without box... very disappointing.

Bought a bottle of the Drumshambo Inaugural Release from O'Briens, very nicely packaged, be interesting to see how it compares to the standard release. It's an extra €20 more expensive, partially I guess for the novelty/collectible value.

What's the box worth that its worth your while going to that effort over it?

I've a box here from the standard version if you'd like it? It's almost the same

In fairness if you're paying for the Inaugural Release you want the packaging, that's what makes it. Plus considering I can walk into my local O' Briens right now and pay the same price for one with a box I don't think its unreasonable to return it.

Yeah, but I'd say it would be pricey. It's by far the nicest tasting constituent. And only makes up 8% of the overall whiskey.

I've had the sherry cask that goes into Three Swallows as well, and it was equally as nice. I wouldn't normally be a fan of that one itself.

Fair enough. I've never bought something like that so was a genuine question about the box. I thought it would add value or something?

After a brief diversion to Hennessy XO land, time to crack out the Lot 40
Brown sugar and caramel to the fore on the nose.

Nice enough alright but not much depth to it. Short on the tongue. My Canadian Rye knowledge is up there with my Islay knowledge though, so I have bugger all to compare it to outside of your classic bourbons and Tennessees.

But as always, free whiskey is the best whiskey.

Back onto Ardbeg 10. Hated it at first but love it now. It's great going back to something you really enjoy

Cazale recommended it to me on the basis of my search for nicely Peated whiskey and was underwhelmed by it at first but it has definitely grown on me..

In the longer term it woud add value, i believe there is a limited element to the inaugural release. I've a bottle and am almost sure its numbered. So for example in a few years time if someone has an unopened bottle with packaging vs. someone with just the bottle there would be a difference. Not sure how much scope there is for collecting Drumshanbo to be honest but i understand the posters annoyance is all.

I had a Connemara Peated last night. Very tasty indeed, not knock your socks off but enjoyable none the less. I will admit I've not had huge exposure to peated stuff, I'd pick up a scotch then buy an Irish instead.

    Worth trying a Laphroaig so.
More expensive but a much smoother Peat experience in my opinion..
Connemara always worth having as an option at the less expensive end though I think too

Tonight's order was Glenfiddich 15 years old with one ice cube ( don't ask :) )
Then Jameson Caskmate Stout Edition, mainly because the bottle is nearly empty so trying to clear room to justify more recent purchases ( not sure to whom though 🀔 )

West Cork Glengariff Series Peat charred cask was a new purchase this week along with the Ratheadon, so trying that now before going to sleep..

I'm actually going to ask about the "one ice cube"... I had an ice incident here tonight. So ice is a talking point.

Also, let us know what you think of the Ratheadon.

Never got the Redbreast 10 yesterday but the missus heard me going on about it and got me one for my birthday next month. Happy days!

I really wish this desire for whiskey in boxes would just go away.
It is pointless extra packaging and cost that provides no purpose whatsoever.

When it comes to cardboard boxes, the bottle usually looks way better than the box, anyway - Waterford being a good example here.

I remember being in the basement of a venue in Glasgow. As cases of single malt came in, it was someone's job to remove each bottle from it's tube and throw the tubes in a big wheelie bin! Such a waste !
And make no mistake, the consumer pays for this nedless packaging whether they want it or not.

Yep, it's a complete waste, but obviously adds a "premium" element for some distilleries, if they are trying to appeal to collectors or what not.

for me it just goes straight to the Bin as soon as the bottle is opened. I can understand wanting the box if you plan on keeping or gifting the bottle though.

Yep I will let you know on the Ratheadon definitely...

Not much of a story around the ice cube really but it is now one of those things with me:)

Generally drink my whiskey neat, occasionally adding a drop of water but mostly just neat..
Glenfiddich was one of my first Speyside whisky experiences all those years ago and is a whisky I like alot and probably have a certain affinity to now...Now, this may be just an ingrained habit/belief at this stage but I just feel it tastes better with one ice cube...
It can't be 2 or 3; always has to be 1:D
So probably not as interesting as you hoped but there you go
