Totally agree. Someone asked me the same thing in the comments. Golf will always be hard to beat in so many ways, guess that’s why it’s so successful. If money was no object and we all had a garage with space this is a car for those days you just want to go for a drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Yeah it's a very limited car in that way, which is same as any proper weekend toy. Although it's based on a Yaris, no rear doors would make it a non runner for me, cost aside. Last time I was changing car I wanted something fun and was trying to convince myself that I could make 2 doors work but I know really that putting small kids in and out with the rain pissing down would get to me. That's where the golf shines, completely practical everyday car with a bit of fun when needed. Very few people have the means as you say Mark to have space and cash to have a 50k toy in their garage. Then if you could, you might go for something more out there like a kit car or something.
Fair play to anyone that can make it work as a daily with kids etc but I couldn't. Must be getting old.

    Great review Mark, very polished.

The car looks really cool but as you say, I think it’s one you’d buy if you had plenty of cash and a large garage and this was just going to be your toy for the occasional hoon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭carsfan2

Your production values are sky high these days Mark. Fair play to you.
as the guys have said, you would want to have a daily driver to go with one of these. I wonder though would you have as much fun in a fiesta ST but at legal speeds?
Personally would prefer something that flies under the radar which it doesn't. It reminds me of impreza turbo from years ago. They used to say that the grip levels were so good that it stuck to the road until it didn't....
Then when it let go you were going so fast a big accident was inevitable. People didn't have small accidents in those cars.

Cheers - intro wasn’t my work a friend who is a very bored pilot did it for me but the rest is mine. Nice to do it when I’ve the time but when a lot of people watching won’t give that kinda stuff a second thought, it can be hard to motivate yourself to work on 10 seconds of footage for an hour or two!

I like how you photoshopped the speedo number in to make it look faster, for dramatic effect like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

In fairness that intro would have passed for top gear, similar style obviously to what they do with the sound and light. I wouldn't have a clue where to start with that so prob don't appreciate the amount of work it takes. Kudos to your friend.

Just watched your id3 video Mark.
Is driving one for a month by way of penance for your enthusiastic driving of the Yaris GR?!

Seriously though, how’d you get one for a month on loan? I’m guessing VW are keen to get the word out there. Interesting that Bob flavin has gotten an ev on long term as well. Think you did better though. I have only seen a handful of id3’s on the road whereas there is a new Hyundai Tucson on every street now it seems.

    I just asked :D

Their communications guy is sound to deal with so I just proposed the idea of doing some vids for people that are anything but EV nerds.

The ID3 is actually pretty good on its feet - handles well and is nippy!

Missed that... the car seems to be gone now... I knew it would have sold fast.. Anyway hopefully he will look after it as well as I did :)

Yeah, the 330e is good, the home charging is still a novelty, and in the 3 weeks I've had it only used 1/4 of a tank of petrol, and that is down to the few (Xtraboosts) blasts on the road.

Re the differences, less plush (obviously), smaller (thank god), but with a nicer driving feel. The full electric is very smooth, but the range (as expected) is realistically 20 miles only. The 330 Sport as opposed to the 530 M-sport is far more forgiving on the poor road surfaces / speed bumps.

Overall loving the experience. The cold spell offered the remote climate heating thingy from the app, a lovely extra. With the lockdown I haven't been able to take it for a proper drive as yet, so looking forward to that day...

Any date for yours yet ?

It's incredibly difficult to find a car with radar cruise, lane-keep assist, and collision prevention/warning in Ireland. I have an itch for an automatic luxury saloon but the dealerships are full of base-spec cars. I would much rather a high tech spec 520d SE than an m-sport with no optional extras. My budget is 27k. I would love a w213 E-class as they are motorway munchers and seem to be more reliable than BMW, however, I can't find the spec I want in Ireland so I may have to settle for a W212. It's relatively easy to find a Volvo S90 that matches the spec I want, however, Volvo reliability is questionable and the dealership network isn't good and the s90 gearbox isn't refined like it's German rivals.

On a side note, I think the prices that top marques charge for optional safety equipment is appalling. Tech that reduces the probability of collisions or accidents shouldn't be optional extras.

Look at GT motors in North dublin. He has some lovely very high spec 5 series. 27k probably a little low for a 2017 g30 just yet with all the options but you'd get pretty much any f10 you wanted for that.
Towards the end of this year 27k should get you what you want.

They have really nice stuff, I will take a look. Thank you. Are you aware of an equivilant dealer for Mercedes?

No, I don't know anyone that just does Mercedes like this guy does bmw. There's a place called Reilly cars that seem to just do Audi if that's of any interest to you. Apart from that it's just use the search functions and hope something turns up for you.

I went for the V90 taking everything into account - stuff like remote start, Pilot assist, Pedestrian assist, and real leather standard in the even the base model. I got the Polestar optimisation which for around 800 quid transforms the transmission. Reliable so far but I’ve read issues about all these cars. Having said that I’d like a 5 series too especially one with decent spec

Sickening that you can have cars like that with a small deposit and monthlies of 399 in the UK. As usual we get rode here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

How much does it start here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,609 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I think they are starting at low 50s, Frank Keane has one or two for sale @ around 53k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Just checked there, starts at €49,950 before adding options. Interior is so much better than the gti but I'd still probably pick it over the bmw. The 1 series is just not a nice looking car at all after seeing a few of them now on the roads.

It’s so frustrating. Think you only need to put down 2k as well. Can you imagine the amount of cars like that on the road if it cost the same here? I wouldn’t be looking at 2/3 year old cars that’s for sure!

A rare 440i coupe for sale, maybe a touch overpriced but given the rarity I'd say it will sell quick enough.

Just the one ****ty photograph for a car asking 37k.

BTW I see Colm Quinn have a brand new red M135i in stock too. Still not gone on the looks of the 1 Series.

    Edit: Here it is -
