48 Sim with Tesco Handset

Can anyone tell me for sure if a 48 sim will work with a Tesco handset that hasn't been unlocked? I've seen conflicting reports.

It could depend on the make of the handset. Pretty sure a Huawei bought from TM will work on 48.
