Think I read the crowd buying his share are already bushmills owners (could be mistaken there) - just seems odd to remove the drinks best selling point. Then again he is on a downward trajectory these days.

Yeah I mentioned that in my post. (aka Jose Cuervo/Bushmills)
Proximo own Jose Cuervo, 1800 Tequila, Bushmills, Kraken rum and others.

They've been in from the start. Original 20% share holders. Took it to 49% last year. And 100% now.

Also, I suspect that if this is their own spirit, they's make much more of a song and dance about it!!

    Fair point.

He bought a bottle himself in Straffan yesterday, must be out of freebies

    Interesting.
(you are not allowed to use the iStill for Irish whiskey) .

    Why is that?
Obvious not for pot still or malt whiskey. But I assume it was ok for grain/column still.

The iStill is neither a pot still or a column still. It's a sort of hybrid - or a packed column still.

I'm not sure how far it has gone in the regs, but at one stage the iStill was specifically mentioned as being not allowed for Irish whiskey.

They might have achieved 'take off' for it in the States as a product in terms of distribution deals, shelf space, brand recognition independent of McGregor.

W.D. O'Connell Whiskey tasting tonight. Looking forward to trying the future release. I've enjoyed any of their stuff I've tried previously and Daithi their founder is a gentleman.

    That colour range is fascinating.

Some great whiskeys tonight. The 12 year old all sherry Bushmills cask strength was my pick. W.D. O'Connell definitely one to keep an eye on.

They seam to offer 3 types. Pot, plated column and hybrid. Although I’m aware the pot/column ones are not the normal type. I figured it wouldn’t count as a pot still. But though column still would be ok.
I had a quick look at the technical file and can’t see what excludes it. But it’s not exactly a perfect document. Definitions are a bit loose and leave some holes.

It was touch and go there for a while with us running out of Fuisce.

I was looking through their website earlier and doing a "create my own". It wasn;t as expensive as I had expected tbh.

I'll wait til I've the plot down in Leitrim first...

Celtic Whiskey are launching a new podcast.

Launching Monday. The Celtic Whiskey Pod brings you #unchillfiltered conversation with makers of the world's finest drinks.

In our 1st ep. we talk to Kevin O'Gorman Master Distiller at Midleton.

Sonny Molloys have a Midleton 2021 tasting with Master Distiller Kevin O' Gorman coming up. Bit rich for my liking but someone might be interested.

The event tasting pack will be delivered in advance and features a 35ml sample of both the Midleton Very Rare 2021 and the Sonny Molloy’s Redbreast 16 Year Old Single Cask, a bespoke Galway Crystal whiskey tumbler engraved with the Sonny Molloy’s logo, an impressive Redbreast drinks coaster and a few surprises.

We’ll also have a set of the much sought after Midelton Very Rare whiskey glasses (Yes, those beautiful glasses!) for the best social media post for the event. Use #SonnyMolloysWhiskey and be sure to tag us in your posts.

Only 21 places costing €80 per person will go on sale at 1pm tomorrow (4th March) via Eventbrite.

    They've increased their range!
We have an istill 500 - I'm not a huge fan and we don't use it very much - and never for whisky.

Despite what iStill say, I don't believe that their pot still qualifies as a copper pot still as far as the technical file is concerned. There was a document knocking around a few years ago specifically mentioning the iStill as being prohibited but I don't think that made it into the technical file. They specifically mention "copper pot still".

The other thing is that their hybrid or column still aren't continuous column still s but are pot stills with a column stuck on top. This is not what the technical file means when it refers to "column still" - what they mean is a Coffey still - a totally different affair.

Anyway, Revenue have to sign off on any equipment used in the production of Irish whisky - I wonder if an iStill has been signed off on.

O'Briens selling Waterford Ratheadon 1.2 for €65 - think that's the lowest price I've seen for a Waterford release here.

    https://www.obrienswine.ie/products/waterford-distillery-ratheadon-1-2-70cl

    They also have:
    * Roe & Co €30
    * Knappogue Castle 14 year old €55
    * Tullamore Dew 12 year old €40
    * Kilbeggan Pot Still or Small Batch Rye €45

What's the consensus on this? Worth the price tag?

Haven't had the 1.2 Ratheadon but the 1.1 was fantastic, so assuming simialr quality then yes.

    A favourable review here.

I've a €20 o' briens voucher from Christmas, been waiting for some sort of sale. Not sure what to go for, have had the knappogue 14 before. Is €45 quid for Waterford too good to pass up?

If you haven't had the Ratheadon before, I'd say got for it :)

Got an email earlier to say O'Briens whiskey sale is now on.

Anybody else doing the Roe & Co CS tasting this eve?

I received my very decent sized sample in the post this week - with a tasting glass. Not bad for a freebie!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,246 ✭✭✭LollipopJimmy

I'm not doing the tasting but curious to try the Roe and Co CS. I don't like the standard Roe at all though.

I think I'll grab a bottle of the Ratheadon at that price.

The other one that caught my attention was the Drumshanbo Inaugural Release. Anyone got any feedback on that?

As I mentioned a few weeks ago on here Redbreast have a new variation coming out soon. Here is the blurb released today on it.

Time travel may not be possible, but it is pourable. What started as a request from a few Redbreast fans turned into a chorus over time, and that got our nostalgic engines fired up. We looked back into our past, and got excited at the prospect of reimagining a particular Redbreast song that hasn’t been heard in decades. All we ask of you, Redbreast fan, is to free up a space on your shelf and maybe break out some vintage whiskey tumblers to really get in the mood. This blast from our past is making its return next week, and we can’t wait to past it on to Redbreast fans. All will be revealed next week, but here's a primer for what lies ahead (and behind, chronologically speaking).

With the lettering at the end, the seventies style and hints to decade and behind chronologically I'm going to guess a variation of the ten year old. The bottle attached was released in the seventies.

My cousin has that bottle, still half full. Her father was a committed whiskey drinker until he was told he'd have to give it up due to ill health. He spent his final 12 years on earth drinking gin :D

Nothing I say will persuade her to give it to me despite the fact that nobody in her house drinks whiskey and that her father was the one who introduced me to whiskey. I may have to break in!

Damn this forum! My bank balance takes another little hit. I had to get it at €65. It's absolutely gorgeous. Doesn't feel like 50% abv at all. I think I've found my new "special occasion" whiskey.

I envisage a sitcom worthy plot involving the substitution of a contemporary RB 12 for the contents of the bottle...
Reminds me of the classic episode of radio comedy Cabin Pressure where Talisker whisky features as the McGuffin :)

I could substitute Proper 12 and they wouldn't know the difference!
