Hi, I am looking at getting something to manage my passwords. Seems all my emails have been pwaned now. I am using different variations of the same password on different sites and apps but it is impossible to keep track.

Are they any use and secure. For the likes of NetFlix it it possible to use them with the service being used on different platforms.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Lastpass

However - take your time to setup properly.

    +1 lastpass
use it for all non-critical sites for which there are 100's. its case every site has its own unqiue password also lets you know if site has had a security breach so you can change the password.

What’s the proper setup? Genuine question, I’ve been using it for years and was wondering if I’m missing something.

LastPass is excellent though. I keep everything on it, integrates with all devices, and you can have all the information automatically go to someone when you die.

    Use Multifactor Authentication
    Run the Lastpass security challenge
    Enable country restrictions
Use a stong passphrase for your master password
Use onetime passwords if you logon from untrusted or public machines
Share access with your spouce's Lastpass account. If something ever happened to you your lastpass account will be so useful to your surviving family members as they can get access to all your online stuff (bank accounts, life insurance, pension, social media, email, etc...).

I use Lastpass, very happy with it tbh, used it before it was purchased by logmein and have continued to use it since. One thing to note is your secure vault, CC's, Passports and the like, is only stored on the device you add the data on, so if you lost your phone, it is all gone.

I use Enpass. The Desktop application is free to use. Android/Apple client is $5.99 a year or $39.99 for a lifetime subscription.

    Hi,

I'm trying to find a software tool that will allow me to securely store passwords for multiple accounts across loads of accounts on a Mac - e.g. p/w's for Facebook, Twitter, Adverts, Boards, Bank Accounts, etc.

All of the tools I can find have a monthly fee but I hate this pricing model and I'm looking for something that I can buy for a once-off cost, and upgrade it in the future as and when I need to.

At the moment, I have them written in a notebook but if I ever lose that notebook I'm screwed! :-(

    Appreciate any recommendations?

Anything wrong with Google password managed?! Built-in to chrome and Android. It also works on iOS from Chrome, but isn't as neatly integrated into app as on Android. You can also try the free tier of LastPass and Bitwarden, but I haven't used then personally.

I don't think you'll have a huge selection of once-off payment products. Whatever needs cloud to properly function, will be rather be subscription based.

    Why pay someone ?
linux --- look in that direction and save "keys" to usb.
even password the the file on usb "pen drive".
a plug and play method which companies make profit
from selling ready made secure keys--
which you can do yourself with a bit of reading.
(not sure if works with mac but i would try if i used mac)
read linux forums and maybe see something there which means
"companies" not in overall charge of your storage\security.

If you have infinite amount of time, sure. Other people value their time, so prefer to offload some of the work to others.

    Back up your notebook.

hence the reliance on others and data theft\loss\transfer.
learn a lot with 1 hour a day for 5 days.
As an example look at big tech "money" and chrome last two years.
using microsoft products you not notice except someone tell you of issues.
chrome has been fail after fail but a lot hidden because like a cheap mixed blended wine
"it works" large amount of time on microsoft platform. whilst more secure platforms are forced
to try to use it as otherwise cannot access sites on microsoft software.
(for any tech reading) government department site accessable by other browsers and
when chrome "updates" site access is lost forcing the use of chrome to gain access.
You will find "this site supports chrome -internet explorer11 and firefox" .(lot of time firefox
security settings have to be dropped to work If ).
    government cash for microsoft.

I use Keychain but I am in the Apple ecosystem which is brilliant. Syncs across all devices and those in my family group which is handy when dealing with iPads, iPhones, computers etc.

As a failsafe, I also use a password protected Word file where I have noted pretty much any password that is important to need in the future. The password to get into this file is one I couldn't forget but is not really guessable. No need for paid-for third-party password managers in my opinion.

Generally use LastPass for the majority of my passwords. Anything for work I tend to use keepass, it does work on phone too from what I gather. Bitwarden also sounds pretty good too and it's open to public auditing.

Yep it's free. Also keepass has been publicly audited for security. Don't think xc is audited but still good.

Yeah it's FOSS with a GNU license as it says right on the landing page.

The database file with all your passwords is up to you to manage however. I back it up to my phone (where I also use kpxc) and it's good to keep one on a reliable, preferably paid cloud storage too. If you use it on your phone it's up to you to sync manually though. Every few months I use the merge feature to merge the phone & desktop databases, then backup the new one.

You don't want to have a storage drive die and then lose all your passwords. This is likely one of the reasons people use paid services? I'd still rather handle it myself though.

I use Lastpass and so does everyone else I know in IT.

Thanks for your reply Grogi. I don't use Google browser - prefer Firefox and Safari but in any case, my understanding is that the Google Password Manager doesn't automatically fill in the passwords for desktop apps and doesn't work for other browsers.
