It would require change on the behalf of FG also to meet in the middle. It's the nature of coalition governments.

It'll be interesting if after the next election the only numbers that could work are FG/SF and I wouldn't rule out that scenario. It would only take a small gain for both at the expense of FF for that to happen.

This time around it was a 3 way tie. Next time around FF lose say 10 seats and FG and SF pick them up you're looking at something like the current government with SF replacing FF or another election. Pressure could come on FG.

SF looking at likely 50+ seats if there was an election soon, even with 10 less seats FF would still be an option, SF even contemplating coalition with FG would be too much for many supporters,

A coalition between SF and FG would be too much for many supporters on both sides. they are just too far apart.

At the moment the electorate are split and don't trust any of the big parties and that trust will have been even more eroded by this government so for the next couple of elections we are going to see some strange coalitions and a few of the smaller parties rising and falling like the tide. We do need a 3rd that can sit between FG and SF and can put it up to them in a government.

Hopefully we will never get a single party government in the this country again and that their will always be a coalition with a strong party and not the weakness we have seen from the likes of Labour and the Greens over the last decade of so.

My biggest fear for this country is a majority SF or FG government and both I think would destroy the country.

Politics makes strange bedfellows but most people who are FG activists HATE Sinn Fein and that isn't because they are working class or because they hate land lords or even because of magic money trees ; it is because of what FG people regard as terrorism, though of course people in their twenties who don't remember the troubles may not care as much.

Sinn Fein would certainly go in with FG if they controlled the agenda.
