What is the difference?

I was looking at a PIR recently where it mentioned load. I dont recall the exact values, but you will get the idea.

It was for connection to yard lights, and mentioned max load of 500w or 300w if LED lights.

Why is there a difference in these lights?

Just read that LED have a high starting current. That was news to me. Florescents used to be the baddies at both make and break.
So the PIR switch contacts undergo more stress for LED switching on.

I looked at a few and they still seem to specify incandescent/fluorescent rating

Hadn't noticed or heard of the led de-rating. It would be unusual to max-out the rating with led unless you were controlling floodlights

I looked again at the spec sheet. It mentioned 1000watt for normal or 300 watt for LED load. This is it.

So it was fitted on a farmyard to replace a bogey one. With the wind on the mountainside, it is going on and off like a pelican crossing.

What would you use instead? For an exposed farmyard with heavy winds.

Ideally with a good "reach" of the sensor.
