Job done, crappy performance but now a 6 point cushion between us and 5th, if at the start of the season I'd been offered that after 25 games I'd have absolutely taken it.

Nice to have a chance to rest key players on Thursday.

    Next in the league

    Chelsea
    Palace
    City

All away, then West Ham at home.

Nice result in the end. Could have easily dropped points the way we played. Newcastle looked a real threat in the first half despite little possession and came out second half and bossed the game for maybe 10 minutes.

    Delighted with the three points.

I really hope Greenwood sees more football now in the run in. At the expense of Martial.

Phew! 16th time scoring 3 goals this season. That is some stat considering how uncomfortable it is watching United at times thanks to that leaky defence.

Thought James showed value of having an actual right sided player. The goal he scored summed up the need to have an option for when the ball is played from one side to the other. At times he also injected some liife into attack with ability to dart forward and get the defence retreating. So obvious that is the position to add a player to for next season.

Matic was very good in second half.

Martial should not start in the league ever again

Martial needs to hit the reserves.

Can't keep carrying him for 70 minutes.

Going to be very interesting game vs Chelsea, they'll suit us big time.

Delighted with that, big 3 points. Important to grind them out when you play like that!

Bit of a cushion again in the top 4 which is probably gonna be needed come seasons end.

James needs to work on his final ball into the box. A few first time balls every so often wouldn't hurt either.

    Martial is robbing a living

Not at all, but realistically we've been played off the park at home by one of the most lacklustre sides imaginable, and not for the first time in recent memory.

There's something dreadfully wrong at United, but we keep managing to do just enough to paper over the cracks.

Job done although made it look v difficult.

I 100% agree with the above though, some times like this evening United will push on and get the win they really should be getting. And then other times like WBA or Sheffield United they falter. As you say, papering over the cracks.

There is definitely the bones of a good squad there to dare I say it, mount a title challenge but missing quality in key positions and then the coaching aspect defending set pieces, defensively shaky, etc.

If those issues could be addressed properly who knows what could happen next season.

2nd after 25 games though, in a good position to build on.

If only we had a couple of decent Centre halfs

Can you imagine the absolute scenes if teams managed by Ole, Rodgers and Moyes finished ahead of Klopp?

Comfortable in the end. First half was definitely down to us being sloppy but I was equally impressed and surprised by Newcastles intensity, not what we needed after our trip to Turin.

That's not the first time this season that we've struggled against a team willing to press well but it's also not a coincidence that we've gone onto completely dominate the final third of these games either. It's all well and good pressuring us into mistakes for 60 minutes but Newcastle barely had a kick off the ball after that.

The annoying thing about tonight is that had we put in a solid performance it would have set us up nicely for the next few league games we have coming up against tough opposition.

After that performance I don't see us being an in form side going into a run of difficult ties.

We could end up producing more poor performances in the next few weeks.

I'd love to see us go on a run of good form like we did towards the end of last season, but we just don't seem to have it in us for some reason.

    Glazers Out!

    That's ridiculous...

Why would you inflict that on the reserves?

At this point it's a real possibility.

Although we all know they'll have some sort of renaissance between now and the end of the season, annoyingly enough.

    Jammy goal.

Newcastle deserve to be a few ahead. I'd be shocked if they don't come back and beat us.

Lol what do you be watching? A few ahead?

It's actually lovely watching them come crashing back down to earth. 9 points ahead of them now, it'd be unforgivable to finish behind them.

I hate that we're not challenging for the league and I don't think we ever should be just happy with top 4 but 2nd is there for the taking, there should be no excuses.

I think it would actually be unforgivable for ourselves or Leicester to finish outside the top 4 at this stage

You'd imagine they will come out of their funk and go on a run at some point alright. Important for us to get at least a draw against Chelsea, we've beaten Tuchel teams a couple of times in recent memory so if he keeps up the style of play it will suit us. 6 from the next 9 would be a decent return.

Luke Shaw has become a really good LB, surprised he hasn't been picked for England in recent years think he's better than Chilwell at Chelsea tbh

The reserves would be destroyed if they had Martial, they are playing so well lately,I would take any of them ahead of him.

I'm a bit surprised Joe Hugill hasn't at least made the bench for the first team. Been banging in goals.

I’ve a soft spot for James. Happy to see him get his goal tonight. He was really good positionally from a defensive point if view too. It’s clear why Leeds want him. He’s a coachable player and has raw attributes. Very happy to have him as a squad player.

We weren’t at our best tonight but were comfortably deserving winners. Back 4 were all very good IMO. I actually can’t remember a single clear cut chance for Newcastle. Half volley from St max in second half? Could be wrong. Europa league is going to be a big burden.

Martial was really really poor. I thought he turned a corner with his form after the COVID break but it’s just very hard to defend him.

If I’m being honest about this team I think we are in a big battle to get top 4. We were at a disadvantage to begin with at the outset of this season and I think we will need to grind this season out.

I’ve said this before but there is a very strange atmosphere in this thread. I’m defo not the only one who feels that way either. Too many hoping for stuff to happen so they can prove they were right and others wrong. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong.

Ole is halting Greenwood's progress playing Martial, he offers nothing to the team, he takes up positions that hamper other players on the pitch.

The goal we conceded tonight was shambles, a poor header by Maguire that maybe could have been avoided if DDG could command the box a bit like Henderson showed on Thursday.
